      Travel Blogs from Ilha Grande

From the big city to a big island!

We set off from Rio via a chilly mini bus and a VERY rocky boat ride. 3 hours later and we were in paradise... with one hitch. The next day, a Thursday, was a Brazilian national holiday meaning the island would soon be flooded by local holiday makers. This would have been fine if we had booked somewhere to stay in advance. We spent a flustered hour running around the island and finally found a place to stay for all 3 nights, unfortunately, this was a different hostel every night. As ...

... was like a walk in Wales. I said, yes but I'm usually only this wet because of the rain.

After about an hour and a half we got to a nice enough but unspectactular beach where we stopped for very reasonably priced food given the location. The other touirsts on the island are nearly all gringos, this was really weird; most of the places I've been are off the tourist trail and filled with Brazilians. But I did meet a Brazilian and some great people from Mexico, Australia, the UK and even Scots at the hostel.
I booked a tour for Tuesday that was to take me the whole way around the island (in one day) and visit 6 ...

... and no real roads to speak of. We get off at Vila Do Abraao, which is the main town. It is a pretty but busy little harbour town ferrying tourists around the island to the various beaches and to and from the mainland. We walked up the small cobbled and sandy streets to find out Pousada for the night. It is the height of tourist season here and as we had booked late we were not able to stay in the same hotel for the 4 nights we were here. The first night (Saturday) ...

      ... wave becomes almost addictive.

The next day we went on a boat trip to lagoa azul (the blue lagoon). It proved to be a bit of a tourist trap as much time was spent on the boat and very little time at the lagoon itself. There were plenty of amazing fish there but we didnīt really get the opportunity to properly explore the lagoon and were whisked off rather expediently to the next destination (a **** beach with nothing to offer) just as we were beginning to ...
