      ... in real after having seen it on TV. The area is so huge though! The bird’s nest is quite impressive from up close, although you can tell that the government cannot afford its maintenance with several parts already looking rusty. The architecture around the Olympic park was really nice as well, especially the curvy IBM building stood out.

      ... couple. When I asked what the dish I was served, the Chinese woman said, "It is the one in the middle." She was referring to the dish displayed on the wall.

      "You speak English?" Olivia asked.

      The woman responded, "I speak a little bit of English." She revealed that she attended Beijing Sport University.

      ... bathrooms are on the 25 worst bathrooms in China list. When we left a random guy selling hats popped up out of nowhere saying hello, hat, cheap for you. I have been waiting for that exact scenario to happen: it also occurred, with the same guy, when we pulled up to the Great Wall. It seemed like he came out of the bushes ready to sell us all hats. We went to the Golden Temple for lunch, a nearby tourist ...

In our few days in beijing we only really masted Hello (Ni Hao -or in my world, Hi Hao) and thank you - it's amazing how much you can communicate through Chloe and Alasdair's universal sign language! Plus, the help of my iPhone app and the locals good knowledge of English. We made our way around some of the key sights and visited the 'hutongs', which are little alleyways filled with all sorts of weird and wonderful or not ...
