Travel Blogs from Ocho Rios
To arrive at Ocho Rios, one must penetrate the mountains that seperate the north and south of the island by dense jungle. Soon after arriving in Ocho Rios, we put our backpacks on and trotted off to find a cheap hotel. A peace-core worker we met in Kingston drew a little map for us so we could find the non touristy area. We werent walking for …
... this was not the case as our great driver was pulled from us because of scheduling problems and we were left with a rude, homophobic and unfriendly tour guide. He didn't really listen to us when he said we wanted to visit the non-touristy areas of Ocho Rios. Instead, we visited several shops and almost everywhere we travelled in his company car, we were ambushed by people trying to sell us stuff (mainly homemade beaded ...
... the 'roof' (his house) and 'single bed' (in his room) he is singing about, we actually stood in and saw! So cool. We got to see a fun local band, that I got to sit in with (rocking the maracas) and we saw his final resting place as well as the resting place of his mother. We also saw the historic rock Bob Marley would lay on to get inspiration.
Before our trek up to see the mausoleum, there was a bar, and I purchased a special "Nine Miles" shot - which they set ...
... Café for breakfast. Today I had a Canadian poached egg. It was a poached egg on Canadian bacon on half an English muffin. I put Hollandaise sauce on mine. I also had a small piece of French toast, a bran muffin and yogurt. There is so much to choose from at the buffet. While we were still eating Erin joined us and she had a small snack. When we were finished Erin and I went to Salsa dance class in the Spinnaker Lounge. We learned meringue, ...

I am not sure how anyone can go to the gym here after say 1000! Even though it is air conditioned your energy levels seem to get zapped by the constant heat. Early morning is the only way i can go here, which suits me fine as i am use to it.

Historical Traveler Reviews Silver Seas Resort Hotel Ocho Rios
I love it, but it has changed. It was a pretty busy resort when I started going there about 1980. Clean, nothing fancy, no tv or phones then. But that's ok. Friendly staff, although a little slow but no problem, soon come. Have stayed there about 8 or 9 times. The location is great and for the money, you can go other places, try other restaurants and still not break the bank.
Being a Jamaican, I can put up with a lot from my fellow Jamaicans. I called up Silver Seas to make a reservation for the Easter weekend like all other people from Kingston who have to get to Ocho Rios for that weekend. It was the last place available. The man that answered the phone was quite rude. First of all, he didn't even answer the phone with the name of the hotel. I had to ask otherwise I would have thought I dialled incorrectly and caught someone at home in their bathroom. I let that bit slide and proceeded to tell him which nights I wanted to make reservations for plus how many people would be coming with me. In order to guarantee the reservation, the first night's deposit must be paid to the hotel's account at a bank here in Kingston. That I fully understand and had no problem with. He gives me the details of the bank and account number and then says I will need to fax him a copy of the deposit slip in order to guarantee the room. So I ask him the fax number and his name. I got the fax number but he was hesitant to divulge his name. He eventually gives me his christian name and then says "I'd rather not divulge my surname". So I begin to question that issue because if I'm going to pay over my money to this place then I need a complete name for my own piece of mind. He refused to give me his full name as if the transaction is an underhanded one. I ask to speak to his supervisor and he responds by saying "I am the supervisor". So I ask for the owner and was getting anywhere with that either. So I just told him goodbye even though he had a reservation for me. I'd rather stay in Kingston while all my friends go to Ocho Rios to party than enter into a transaction with these people. Be careful of this place, something is not right about how they do business!!!
Be prepared to get a room that does NOT LOOK at all like the one you see on the pictures... The rooms are very gloomy, the light gets darker and darker. The bathroom is dirty and leaky. The front reception area needs a lot of touch ups. The staff were friendly. The neighborhood is quite scary!!! It is located in a very bad, unattractive area. We did not leave any valuable things in the room but we also did not stay for more than 24hrs! We rented a car so we didn't really roam around the little streets. If you really want to have a peace of mind when travelling in Jamaica, do not choose this place!!!
Silver trash can
The Silver Seas is the ultimate trashcan! We had to kick our door to enter the room. The rooms do not resemble the pictures! Do not be fooled and ruin your Jamaican vacation. There are NO PHONES in the rooms to call for help. There's NO HOT WATER TO SHOWER! There's NO STAFF to get a drink! There aren't window coverings, the blinds might have 3 slats. The beach is another JOKE.......more concrete than sand and dirty. The one thing there's plenty of is drugs. They're offered to you constantly by the people allowed to "hang out" in the Silver Seas! Whoever the owners may be, you have alot of cleaning to do to get rid of the people "hanging out" there and the hotel itself! we left within less than 24 hours, but not before things were stolen from our locked room. Do not stay there!!!
My now husband proposed to me on the jetty at the Silver Seas. Our 1st day there was magical. We had breakfast at the restaurant on site.
This is a hotel that will leave a bad taste about Jamaica. It must have
Silver Seas no problems mon!
Silver Seas is a great place for those who want to explore more of jamaica, you can go and come as you please, the rooms are average and has a excellent sea view. I would recommend this resort to those who want cheap, clean accomodation and does not want all the trappings an all inclusive resort provide.
The hotel room was dirty, the air conditioner visibly rusty, furniture old broken-down, and one bare lightbulb hanging from a wire down from the ceiling. From the sidewalk outside you could see right into the bathroom - no window covering. It is located off an alley. The staff entered our room when we went out for a little while and it was not for housekeeping purposes. The place just gave us the creeps - called another hotel and left within two hours of arrival. We were actually afraid to sleep there. Had to pass between the pool and the bar to reach our room. One employee was courteous and helpful.
Silver Seas - just the place
A very laid back place. Good for adults do not think little kids would like it. Rooms are spacious and well appointed. Breakfast and lunch are moderately priced and well prepared. You can walk to town. Excellent bakery as well as several inexpensive eateries are a 5 minute walk away. Excellent reef for snorkel diving right off hotel
2 words "Stay home". the street outside of the hotel are so rough you don't even went to leave the hotel. The hotel is absolutly nasty and smelly. it looks nothing like the pictures and that is why there are no close up view of the hotel on the website. it is so so dirty and run down that we call our travel agent from the hotel and told them to move us that night . we didn't even sleep there.
