      What an amazing way to start a new year. Today is my 34th birthday and I spent the day traveling through the Crete Mountains by bus.  I saw all of the mountain side villages, visited a cave, spent time at the 17th most beautiful beach in the world and ate authentic organic Greek food in a little village.  I met people from Cyprus, Australia and Ireland.       ... so good, so musical, so mellow.     It is Sunday here, and not much in the actual city is open - only tourist town.  I walked by several apartments or flats where extended family was congregating on a Sunday, perhaps after mass.  You could see the mix of new world and old world Greek.  Many older women and man walking in all black.  And the younger people are all just like us.   I headed back to Old Town, where I am staying, for an afternoon ...

      ... on the trail by 7:30. It was a long 6 hr and hot trek. But the experience was worth it. It was a good chance to see Crete's natural side. We were glad to have a cold beer, have a swim in the ocean, and shower in a village hotel room. The next day, we took a ferry to the next village. While we waited for the 6:30 bus back to Chania we walked to a beach and swam and slept. Pretty nice ! ...
