Getting there is half the fun? On Crete we are using public transportation: local and regional buses and ferries. Sometimes things go awry, like yesterday when we asked our bus driver if we were at our stop to transfer to our next bus and he just shook his head no. It's mainly limestone not volcanic, and the small shrubs/vegetation looks more like the leeward side of the island. I've been told there's more of a rainy season here rather than a true rainy side of the island. Elafonisi is a pink sand beach with crystal clear water and all sorts of shades of blue. But the water was FREEZING. We ...

... room to be made up, a carload of German guests arrived and we witnessed a tearful reunion between Maria and the new guests. As she explained later, this group has been returning to her hotel in Georgioupoli every year for over a decade and the affection that each party had for the other was clear. And very touching.

It became clear that this town is a haven for Germans of all kinds as there were streams of them heading in every direction ...
