... the onsen. It really was a brilliant experience and well worth the 3300yen (roughly £20) I had paid to get there and the drenching I had got on the way. On the coach journey back the sky had cleared up slightly, allowing for full views of the impressive mountainous scenery and orchard fields that surround the basin in which Nagano sits. Tomorrow I plan to have a brief look around Nagano before heading to Matsumoto to visit the castle ...

    ... was at 1375m.

Matsumoto castle is not very big. It was constructed between 1592 and 1614. It has 5 stories but from the outside, it looks af though there is only 4. There is a hidden level inside where gunpowder and other armaments were stored. The steps up were quite steep and high. We caught the train to Matsumoto and then changed to go to Nagano. All this was on the local train and not the Shinkansen. By the time we reached the hotel, it was 8.15pm. We couldn't be bothered with dinner by that point and basically did the laundry and went to bed.

The next morning, we are due to go back to Matsumoto again to see the castle there.

There were no photos of the food except for the cakes. The others at the cafe said to order the sandwiches, so we did. When the plate came out, there were 8 pieces of sandwiches and we would just share the plate. Then three more plates of sandwiches tuned up. We ...

... off at the second last stop and then spend about 40 minutes at the station before returning. The carriages on the way up were covered but on the return, they were open. We were hoping that the typhoon would not hit earlier than expected.

Luckily, Owen had given instructions to Ray as to when to get off and the times etc as no one else seemed to know. We were split into two carriages. The views were magnificent and the rain ...
