Shiraz - Yazd - Esfahan

Itinerary : Shiraz - Yazd - Esfahan Dates : 13th November to 17th of November 2007 Mileage in Iran : 2100 km Mileage so far : 13800 km Our second big stop of our Iran tour would be in Yazd, which is 350 km north-east from Shiraz. Yazd is apparently one if the nicest cities in Iran with it's "mud" made buildings and it's apparently one of the oldest city in the world which is still inhabited. So I was quite impatient to reach Yazd as I had no idea how could the oldest city in the world look li...

Finally, some other travellers! And a great hotel

It was a great relief to arrive in Yazd after all the hassle in Shiraz and to check into one of THE loveliest hotels I have ever had the pleasure to stay in - the Silk Road Hotel for any of you heading that way - just metres from the Jame Mosque! The rooms are about $15 but best of all, they also have a dormitory for about $4 per night :-) It was in the dormitory that I met up with some old friends and some new ones, and together we hired a taxi and headed out for the day - to the Towers of S...

Yazd - mud-brick and Zoroastrian capitals of Iran

(Jim)

The bus we took from Esfahan to Yazd was one of the most comfortable we'd been on, and for the first time on the trip we had a TV screen at the front to watch DVD's on. Although the movies we saw were in Farsi just watching the picture was enough to open our eyes. The first movie we saw had something to do with terrorists at work in Iraq, but in this movie the bad guys were being bank-rolled by the US. At various points the story would cut to a group of US soldiers as they carrie...

Mud, mud, glorious mud!!!

Whilst purchasing our bus tickets to Yazd, David had made yet another friend. We got the last two seats on the bus but they weren't together. David's new friend (who just happened to want a sponsor to get into Australia) was going to fix that for us. We got on and sat together and the person who had the seat next to me got on and looked at us. As it was a man, he couldn't sit next to me anyway so just moved off and sat elsewhere. Easy peesy lemon squeezy. We got a taxi in Yazd and tried to ge...

Yazd, Meybod, Kharanaq and Chak Chak

Yazd is pretty much in the middle of the desert. It is very dry and hot here! Iranians` relationship with water is quite interesting, but in Yazd water even has a museum dedicated to it. Iranians have been building wells and irrigation channels for centuries and Yazd is famous for its cisterns and reservoirs. The city is one of the most exotic I have been in Iran: it has many traditional houses that are built around courtyards; they also have `wind towers` to help cool the rooms. These houses...

We had heard loads of things about Yazd, and actually being able to buy a bus ticket to get there, we were kind of a little excited, and we were on a Mercedes for the first time. We did have one problem. Our seat numbers were 1 and 10, but as Lucy and I are married, we knew we would be sitting together, especially, when a man got on the bus brandishing seat number 9, he looked over, and saw I had 1 and he accepted the consequences. Once we arrived at the Yazd terminal, the local Extremist tax...

The Zoroastrian flame burns brightly

Stayed in the awesome Silk Road Hotel for a few nights and filled up on their delicious continental food - no kebabs for 4 days - hurray! The hotel was run by a quirky Dutch bloke who was really in touch with travellers needs. The communal area was set in a beautiful old courtyard with plants and Persian loungers. Very chilled atmosphere, met some lovely people, played a lot of cards and ate a lot of food. Wandered through the charming old city of Yazd down winding lanes, past small dwellings...

Yazd - the old and the new

... in to what seemed the side of the road, before heading down a wide alley. Suddenly I spied a besuited gentleman and a security guard at the door of a building. The taxi stopped. We got out and were instantly heartily welcomed, with much hand shaking to the restaurant. The converted merchant's house is in two parts. Each is made up of a huge room. The first, to the left as you enter is dominated by the central rectangular pool ...
