      ... beach on the Atlantic. We lucked into sunshine and warm fall air. We spent the afternoon and evening in Santillana del Mar, an authentic medieval town with winding cobblestones and half-timbered buildings. Our hotel was a stone-walled collection of slanted floors, odd furniture and creepy old paintings, right out of a movie set.

      We left early Friday morning to head to Bilbao. We trusted the Marquis (our GPS) but – oh boy! ...

      Plane delayed until 13.30 so our plans for walking to Navarette were in jeopardy early on. Arrived in Santander 4pm Drama collecting car over credit cards and drivers licences but sorted in the end. Eugene drove. Very fraught for the first hour or so but eventually all calmed down!       ... roads much more like it...twisties and small nice hamlets with winding trout streams with small huts along the rivers, very little traffic. Arrived in a ancient medieval walled town where we had stayed before in 2009 when we cycled across the Pyrenees - stopped parked & locked up. With my new philosophy of smelling the roses...
