We arrived in Ciutadella just after 4 PM and will be anchoring here for the night. This town was once the capital of Menorca and was an important trading city in the middle ages. The influence of its trade center past are seen in the medieval old town with its many Italian-like style buildings lining the cities main square and its large cathedral.

At the mouth of the harbor is a tower/lighthouse and creates a scenic entrance ...
Ciutadella, Balearic Islands, Spain mylifesjourney... just without the pounding surf.

The northern coast of the island is much more rugged and hilly than the rest of the island, with deep bays cutting in between the hills and the cliffs and sandy beaches lining the backs of the bays. We continued cruising along until we reached Ciutadella on the west coast.

Menorca has a much more rural feel then the other two large islands. The farms are lined with stone calls and if feels much less developed and less populated here too.
Far de Favaritx, Balearic Islands, Spain mylifesjourney... back in the states will relate to is that mayonnaise was invented here, aka Mahonese which is named after this city.

Of course, Stee was up early and out the door to get his fix of ruins and history. He took othe only male guest with him. The island has over 1,600 prehistoric sites, with the largest one being on the edge of Mahon. The Trepucó site was made by the Talaiotic people that lived there between 2,000 and 1,000 BC. He was gone before breakfast so ...

Arenal d'en Castell, Balearic Islands, Spain and Canary Islands madcaravanner... found a shockingly large amount of pottery, which all dates to Roman occupation around 125-50 BC. It´s amazing how much was there considering how long it has been. It was all right below the surface as well. My find of the week was a beautifully etched black varnished shard of some kind of plate. Sadly, because we were excavating a trench filled, presumably, with trash, none of the pottery was complete ...
Ciudadela, Balearic Islands, Spain and Canary Islands celliott76... We explored the town the next morning and had a good coffee at a little cafe overlooking the harbour. Back to the boat and cast off for a short sail around the Island to another little bay where we would stay for another night before jumping across to Mallorca (our favourite Island). The bay was deserted and we tucked into a cove and again watched thunderstorms all around us.
Fornells, Balearic Islands, Spain and Canary Islands bellavita... of a hot spot for the English. The reason for this is readily apparent as the island has a terrain and color quite similar to England. It has rolling hills and is quite green for the Mediterranean. The reason for this (and for its less developed aspect) is that Menorca is the target of strong winds throughout the winter. However, the island is beautiful, and I am made to ...
Ciudadela, Balearic Islands, Spain and Canary Islands celliott76The beautiful holiday I ever had, despite the rainy weather and some jellyfishes when the weather was sunny. In Cala Ratjada there are a lot of beautiful beaches and a pretty "promenade" where you can find a lot of nice tapas bars if you want to eat something. Here you are some of my pictures... have fun.
Is gekrabd. Achter ons liggen net onder ...
