The Land of All Things Ancient

Delphi is a small town perched high on the southern slopes of Mt. Parnassos. The town overlooks other mountains in the distance and the Gulf of Corinth way down below. It is a gorgeous setting for what we were to see while there.

Delphi used to be famous for being the home of a prophetess known as the oracle (a.k.a. the Pythia or sibyl). The oracle worshipped Apollo and could speak his words to others. She became a phenomenon and people would come to her from all around the world for ...

Delightful Delphi

... very reason. The first part of the tour involved a walk through the excellent museum which contains works in stone, ivory, gold, silver and bronze. The workmanship given the time when they were made is quiet astounding, in particular the silver skin of the life size bull and the bronze charioteer.

Aspa dragged us around and all the while kept up a commentary which was informative, in-depth and interesting. Dreaming of Dad's Delphi Adventure

Talked to my dad before I left Athens and he really urged me to go see ancient Delphi. He said it was one of his favorite spots on his Euro trip when he was my age. Caught the 4 hour bus from Athens, through the mountains to Delphi. On the bus I met two french girls who kept me company for the rest of my time there. Set up my tent at the campgrounds and headed back to visit the monuments. Started in the museum, then worked my way to Apollo's ...

... statue of the god Hermes (nude of course), and literally tons of other statues. After the museum, we wandered up the way towards the actual Olympic site where we saw the remains of the old stadium, the hypodrome, Zeus and Hera's temples, the roman baths, and many other training, worshiping, and resting facilities on the site. Another short bus ride (over the highest suspension bridge in Greece) brought us to the rocky beach past Patra ...

Delphi, The Oracle

... and what I witnessed. It was a great legacy that the ancient Greeks have left behind. Unfortunately, many of the ruins could no longer project that sense of completeness and grandiose anymore. Many of its ruins were badly pillaged or destroyed by earthquakes. I did not know whether to feel fortunate to be born in a place where earthquakes never hit ...

... into for what you want) and much was controlled by the priests there. The ancient greek lives were really caught up in myths and gods which I knew beforehand but the impact is felt more when you visit all the sites. To worship is definitely a basic desire in human nature all over. Had some terrific discussions with people on the tour about this and issues of faith and truth.
