A weekend in Songkhla

... I said this would be fine. Jay-Jay spoke very good English, and on Sunday took me to meet his family at their house just outside of Songkhla, it gave me the chance to see how a real Thai family lives! In return, I rang home and let him speak to mum and dad! Jay Jay said that dad has a very clear and kind voice and was ...

An interesting place

... place. There were many shops selling snacks, coconuts, and souveniers made from shells and other attractive items. We did buy a few unique ones. The next day, we went shopping at Hatyai's biggest market before going to the airport. We really enjoyed bargaining in broken English with the sellers. Finally, we bought some clothes and accessories before heading to the airport.

Over a week in paradise

... for the giant bugs lounging on us and the table. The local guys would catch them, rip their wings off and throw them into the water. Very nice. Becca and I saw some crazy insect in our room. It was pretty small and looked like a spider but its front legs were red and went up like a crabs. I had forgotten about the crazy different species in the jungles. The ants were the size of the first joint on my pointer finger. Anyway we went for a 2 hour walk because ...

The Cat, Mouse Dog and the crystal....

Meeting the Mermaid....

... tour down to the Songkhla beaches. We walked over..about a ten minute walk. There are many Temples along the route we took. We also ran into a couple of Charmaine's students . They asked (in Thai...they have very limited English...) if I was her boyfriend ...

Karaoke Day

... other travellers have stayed. It's in LP as a Budget place with a good vibe, but it's the most horrid establishment we've ever set foot in. What do you expect for 200 baht a night? For that price, we laid our bags in the room and set about securing our bus/ boat to Ko Lipe the next day, and checked out a few more hotel options. Cathay had wide hallways with windowless rooms and linoleum that was put in decades ago, almost like it used to be ...

Gem Mining

... buying and selling resembles a dingy sort of back-alley trading floor. My Indiana Jones fantasies are suddenly rekindled. One of the buyers, another American, immediately recognizes Mr. X. "Hey X," he says. "Did you already blow all your money on the girls? What did you bring in for me?" Mr. X starts to show him the rough stones. "Look here," he says to the American. "This garnet is winking at you. What do you give me for this?" The American laughs. "What do you say ...

Bye bye Thailand

... language skills have improved vastly - I can now say 2 whole words in Thai - Hello and Thankyou. Have also come extremely close to some nasty bugs - masive spiders, snakes, cockroaches, been bitten by a million mosquito's, and seen loads others that I couldn't even identify. Still scare the **** out of me though....Will definately be seeing Thailand again someday.

Songkhla

... I found Australian Pink Lady apples, 2 for 60 cents. Cheaper than the Ralph Lauren Fruit and Veg shop in Albert Park. Plus a huge bag of cashews for $2 for something to munch on. Nice. Back to Songkhla for dinner. Ended up with a bad Gary Busey movie on the TV, dubbed into Thai. The funniest part was they'd dubbed in the voices but kept in the soundtrack - hence the only English I was exposed to was the Men Without Hat's song "Safety Dance". Now it might have been ...
