Saving the JR Pass

... ravines, autumn leaves and traditional Japanese houses that I had imagined would scatter the country side. The speed train was fast, quiet, spacious seats (on a standard ticket) and left on time. On arrival to Hakone we walked twenty minutes up a winding hill to our hotel to discover there is a 100 yen ($1) bus that goes from our hotel to the bus station on a loop! We used that bus for all future trips. ...

After a more reasonable start to the day than yesterday going to the fish market we grabbed some breakfast and headed to Yokohama station to get the JR train to Kamakura.  Getting of the train in Kamakura was strange as I had yet to see any other part of japan than the city. Rural life looked a lot ...

Day trip to Kamakura

As planned i headed off to kamakura today, a place famed for its zen Buddhist shrines rather than the Shinto ones of nikko (although there were both). Similarly to yesterday I had a bit of trouble finding the right platform and had to rely once again on the helpfulness of Japanese passers by. Once I'd reached kamakura successfully my next task was to find a cash machine as I'd forgotten to get cash out at Tokyo. This sounds easy enough but the ...
