... the buildings and shops glowed with coloured lights and the streets were filled with people shopping, eating sweets, and exchanging gifts. Excitement was in the air as were tonnes of explosives which snapped, crackled and popped long into the night with a ferocity which would be outlawed in any Canadian municipality.
