Kagoshima

We left the hostel and got a bus to Karashima Jingu train station, arriving just in time for the train to Kagoshima. Kagoshima is known as the Naples of Japan as it has a similar climate, and its own Mount Vesuvius, Mount Sakurajima. The hostel we had booked did not allow us to check in till 5 as many of the hostels in Japan, so we put our bags into lockers and went in search of food and internet. It seemed a shame to spend so much time on the internet whilst travelling but planning onward tr...

Tokyo --> Kagoshima

... jo ohitse?? Virhe! Suosittelen ...

Getting Lost, Active Volcano, Fabulous Garden

... p.m. I asked if I heard right, since their posted check-in time isn't until 3 p.m. The staff assured me that 2 p.m. would be fine. So I sat in the lobby, figuring out what sightseeing I could fit into my truncated afternoon (having lost time getting lost!), and sure enough, at the stroke of 2, the staff handed me the key to my room. My Frommer's Japan guidebook says people in Kagoshima are more easygoing than in the ...

Bitte begraben Sie mich!

... had a thing for them...this was all in front of her 40 year old daughter....who to be quite frank was aghast at her mother!!! That night Jim sat up talking to a bunch of other travellers and he met his first real life professional clown. She was French and originally a therapist though had concluded that dressing up as a clown was a better way of taking away peoples problems.....apparently Jim has given her an open invite to come and stay with us when we get back!

Konnichiwa from Japan

... hundreds of Japanese waving & saying goodbye & our passengers waving & saying sayonara. It was clear we were truly welcomed by this wonderful city. We are now on a westerly course across the East China Sea towards Shanghai, China, where we will arrive Mar. 2nd. I will leave the ship for an overland trip to Beijing to see The Great Wall. (Yes, I have to pinch myself to believe I am actually doing these things). Until then, sayonara. Linda

"Danger, danger!"

... constant giggling, and even squeals of delight from some of the girls (but I`m kind of used to that, I suppose!). Honestly it was completely laughable as I tried to squeeze past everyone on the narrow pathway, with the snow making it even more dangerous, and the sheer cliff faces on either side also giving me slight cause for concern. Only in Japan! Thankfully the view at the top didn`t disappoint, overlooking Onami-no-ike (Japan`s largest crater lake ...

... per night in Abo where was comfortable to stroll around in the morning. Because it was difficult to visit many attractions by public transportation, we decided to rent a car for the second day and then, went round the island anticlockwise. We visited Shitogo Gajumaru-en Banyan Garden, Nagata Inakahama Shore, Okonotaki Waterfall, Hirauchi Shore Hotspring. On our way, we met wild Yaku monkeys sitting on the road. We had a trouble in finding ...
