Animal lovers traveling to Caye Caulker?

... of the cat lovers here in Playa know her.

I checked out her web site and saw that she has a cute little cabana that she rents, and cheap I may say. And the proceeds all go to caring for the cats at her sanctuary. So I decided why would I pay for a hotel when I could stay with Madi and help her and the cats. So I wrote her and booked her little Jaguar cabana for me, my friend and her son.

I wasn ...

Even lazier days

... rest of the trip – Asia, Morocco and Croatia!!

While small towns coming in were really quiet, and Belize city was bigger but run down and not so pretty, the islands were gorgeous and the main drawcard for tourists.

The sea was flat and the boat so fast it was like we were driving over the water. Getting to our island the water was clear blue, palm trees swayed and people lazily bicycled past saying hello. All speaking English was definitely ...

Ok, so I give the dude credit for trying to make a buck and doing what he has to do. That doesn't mean I have to part with my Quetzals at his curbside diner. (The Quetzal is the currency here and also a bright colorful bird).

The return trip to Belize City was about the same as ...

Snorkelling with Manatees and Diving with sharks!

... shark and 2 more sting rays. Back on the boat we had two rum punches (not enough to warm up today!) and then started the ride (with rain pounding into our skin) back to Caye Caulker.

Back at our cabana, had a shower to warm up and then went to meet everyone else at the lazy lizard for some drinks. Had a beer until happy hour started and then had a few of the 2 for 1 rum punch specials, can't go wrong with that! Had to pull out the fake wedding ring (it just makes life easier some ...

Swimming with sharks

Caye Caulker was a peaceful little island where laying in a hammock can occupy entire days! I spent quite a few hours just laying about in front of my hostel, which, happily, was on the beach. When I was not in a hammock I was in the water, swimming in the incredibly blue-green waters of the Split with my fellow gringos. The Split is a new channel dividing the island in two (it was formed by a hurricane a few years ago). I also took a ...

... the morning so it had to be cancelled. The afternoon cleared up so we went for a little bike ride, on bikes provided by the owner of our cabana. The place we went to in the evening ran our of vodka for my Cosmo, so we put rum instead to create what we called a Rastapolitan. We were supposed to leave Caye Caulker the next day (09/10) but we decided to wait and see what the weather was like.

It turned out to be a gorgeous day so we asked our host if ...

Snorkelling with Sharks & Manatees on the reef!!!

... objects; we pottered around taking in our surroundings, the bright orange striped fish on the corals, electric blue tiny fish that flashed like they carried disco spotlights, luminous colours, just incredible then slowly we moved towards the most likely area. Then we heard a shout and some of the others had seen something moving with the grace of ninjas we spluttered our way over and there it was this manatee! One of the oddest animals I have ever seen was slowly floating ...

... to be a favorite of the locals. I had Syd's "Fry" Chicken and Erinn had chicken tostadas. Both were very good, but especially the fried chicken. We were running low on cash and wanted to leave a tip for the guys at BDS, but we didn't know our Visa's PIN for cash withdrawals at local ATMs. We called Visa and, after going through many hoops to verify who we were, were told that we needed to know the old PIN for them to give us ...

... wooden shack on stilts for the next 4 days. It even had a tiny balcony out front with a hammock, which was great for waking up at 6am (this was part of our daily routine by then) to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Caye Caulker was a travellers paradise as it was full of backpacker types from all over the world, had a staggering choice of restaurants and bars (all complete with proper island style designs), and accommodations to suite everyone´s needs and budgets. ... It was way over loaded but nobody said anything because we all wanted to get to the Island. For an hour we all huddled together on this boat as it speed through the reasonably calm Caribbean sea. I occupied my time by trying not to throw up on everybody else. It got dark about 10 minutes into the trip. The Moon luckily was bright enough that we could see were we where going. there were a ...
