This morning we take the Yamanoto Line to Tokyo station where we transfer to the Superview Odoriko train to Atami on the Izu Peninsula, about 90 min by train. Many train lines in Japan have their own jingle playing on the station and by now we know the Yamanoto jingle by heart. This upbeat tune sometimes plays in your head all day ;-) We have …

We thought we were pretty good at catching trains. This morning we managed to catch the wrong one which set us back a couple of hours. Quite a few train changes required in our trip to the Izu peninsula which is (normally) a couple of hours south of Tokyo. We packed up our gear and I'm glad we took the approach of having a base for a week and doing day trips, rather than packing up an switching accommodation every day or two. It took about an hour to pack about a quarter of ...

It's a mixture of Japanese and Western food, however, we just can't stomach a Japanese breakfast with fish. Luckily there are croissants, cereals, yoghurt and fruits as well. We want to go to Perry Road in Shimoda and after checking out that's where we are heading. Perry Road is a pedestrian road and hard to find. We follow one sign and then no more signs after ...

... We all got off the bus, gathered at the intersection along with about 1000 other people. When the light signals walk, a sea of people begin to surge across the street in all different directions. This is the busiest crossing in the world. - Statue of Hatchi dog. A famous story surrounds this statue of an incredibly loyal dog and his owner. A movie has been made about the story. - bus to Harajiku Station. 1 hour of shopping time. - back to hotel. ...

Never as good as the first time

Last Friday, as a birthday gift to myself, I took a day off to visit the Izu Peninsula for three days. Actually, this was the first time since my start here in January that I took one of my precious days of leave. It turned out to become a weekend of many more 'firsts'.

It started with my first long-distance train ride in Japan. No shinkansen (yet); this was a scenic ride along the coast line. I heard all the stories about ...
