Last Friday, as a birthday gift to myself, I took a day off to visit the Izu Peninsula for three days. Actually, this was the first time since my start here in January that I took one of my precious days of leave. It turned out to become a weekend of many more 'firsts'.

It started with my first long-distance train ride in Japan. No shinkansen (yet); this was a scenic ride along the coast line. I heard all the stories about ...

This time we actually saw it from the train and also got a good view from the bus over to Motohakone. Getting off the bus I took a couple of great photos but then a pirate-looking ship was setting off across the lake and we jumped on that, not realising that that would be the end of our views until ...

... 100 years may not be old in the history of humanity but for a wooden structure of 3 floors with extensive woodwork it was pretty darn impressive. The pictures hopefully do it some justice. From top to bottom everything is wooden. The doors are papered over for privacy which means they don't insulate from sound or temperature but traditionally in Japan buildings are not heated (imagine how cost effective that must be). We staggered up to ...

... were kind of surprised when the sake glasses came. It was kind of like a glass in a cup on a dish. The waitress came with a big botlle of sake and poured it in so that it overflowed both the glass and the cup and so we ended up with about three glasses of sake where we were expecting one. :-P Both the food and the sake were delicious. After finishing our meal we went back to the hostel and after the last beer said our goodbyes and i went to ...
