*** To place this in context and view the timeline, begin by clicking on 'About This Blog' *** Saturday, 24 November 2011 After waiting for the morning rain to subside, as foretold by TWN, I was: on the road again goin' places that I've never been seein' things that I may never see again and I can't wait to get on the road again (thank you Willie). Once again, the day started by riding along a twisting and winding coastal road passing ...

... is the story.
Just before supper and right after parking in South Beach State Park we had a stale mate on the following issue. Do we have enough black pepper or not? Obviously it is referring to one large meal. My only word was YES and for the next half an hour, I got an ear full as to why I should think differently. Please vote. A simple YES or no will help to let us solve it.

... marker and just as we watched we saw the whale blow twice.

We drove along the coast and took the old highway at Otter Crest, again the views were great and in the cove about 500 ft. below us there was a large pod of seals.

Back to Star for supper and evening drinks.

    The best in newport!!!

    from anonymous

excelent view, nice BIG clean rooms with excelent service and hospitality. very friendly and accomidating. excellent value, and location. right on the beach, I went for a walk every morning and loved it. I stay at this shilo location yearly and will continue to do so. great rooms at great rates!

    Good stay

    from Beaverton Duck

We had a nice stay at this hotel. The staff was very pleasant and brought us additional pillows right away when asked. The view of the ocean from the room was wonderful, and having a microwave and refrigerator in our room was great. The hotel has two indoor pools, one of which is a three-foot wading pool, which our five-year old daughter loved. Only two complaints: The tub could have used a good cleaning, and our room was near the lounge, so the music and base were a little loud as we were going to bed. If you are staying over the weekend, I would request a room away from the lounge to avoid the noise.

"Mediocre-- not what I expected from a Shilo Inn"

    from anonymous

I grew up in Oregon and had been fed a steady diet of radio and TV ads extolling the virtues of Shilo Inn and their "affordable excellence." My parents had always told me how much they loved the local chain, but my first trip to a Shilo Inn proved disappointing. My huspand and I spent the last night of our honeymoon at the Shilo Inn in Newport. When we called to book the room, we were told we would have a 2nd floor, ocean view room. When we arrived, just several hours after booking, we were told that we could not have a second floor room. Instead, we were placed in a ho-hum first floor room. Our "view" most mostly of tall SUVs in the adjacent parking spaces, not of the ocean. (The next morning when the traffic cleared out, we could see the ocean, though.) I advise you to request and confirm a 2nd floor room as if your life depends on it. The room was somewhat small, but clean. The afternoon sun pooring in through the large window made the room uncomfortably warm, and the A/C was underpowered to cool the room. In a word, "mediocre."

Generic, if you like Wonderbread, this is for you

    from anonymous

The rooms are a bit overpriced for what you get. I should admit I haven't stayed in other hotels in Newport, but I was surprised at the Shilo's spartan rooms. The staff is friendly, and the room was clean, but for the $169 we paid, I expected a bit more than two beds, a microwave and a fridge. It would also be nice to have an electronic key, for security reasons, and a better control of the room temperature than just opening a tiny window and having to ask for a fan. Overall, there must be better options in a town of this size.

    Shilo inn

    from anonymous

    Shilo Inn, Newport,Oregon:

rooms very small and spartan, beautiful views from community porch. good beach access, except a lot of stairs, resturants expensive, food average, quiet seaside setting, very friendly staff.

    Affortable, comfortable ocean front

    from suelynnie

Beautiful ocean view of magnificent coastline. The staff was friendly. The reasonable priced for what you get. The view out of the large windows was not very clear for some reason. I don't know if they were weather beaten or just dirty so it gave kind of a blurred view. You had to look out of the smaller windows underneath to get a crisp view. Overall, comfortable. Newport is a great place to visit with lot's to do and see.

Fair for the price, but that's all

    from reddyrider

Pros=excellent views and location. helpful and friendly staff. clean rooms, albeit circa 1970 style.

Cons=phone rep stated recently remodeled and renovated, but if so, they must have a strange take on what renovation means. the room (admittedly clean) was an ecclectic collection of cheap 25 year old prints, dark laminated fake wood furniture which didn't match from piece to piece, and abhorrently ugly burgendy carpet. restaurant on site seemed run down as well, with furniture from the same time period as the room.

again, for the price (go to orbitz), the stay was fair, and no real complaints. but shilo inn's marketing tag line of "affordable excellence" should be changed to something a little more accurate, say something like just "affordable" period...definitely nothing "excellent" about this property, unless the nicest place you've ever stayed in was a best western.

    A wonderful place to stay

    from anonymous

What can I say. The views were breath taking. The hotel staff was great. Rooms were nice and comfortable with a fridge and microwave. The only thing I did not like were the flat hard pillows, but the sound of the ocean at night made me forget about them. I woked in Newport for a week. The food is to die for and some of the most beautiful coast line I have ever sceen. I will return again and again and stay with Shilo Resorts.DA, Angel Fire, New Mexico

    Affordable ocean view,beach access

    from anonymous

The rooms are very nice with all the amenities. There is a resturaunt and lounge with a great ocean view that serves very reasonably priced meals. Great location and close to downtown Newport.
