... high up on the mountain which gave a wonderful view of the entire valley. The tops of the mountains still had a very heavy cover of snow.

Later we went into one of the houses owned by the Wada family. The house has been in the hands of the family since 1573. The head of the Wada family was the village headman during the Edo Period and the family was a very important, and rich one, in the area. The Wada house is the largest of the ...

Jess had to work today so Jude and I caught up on domestics in the morning. We went for a walk and found the Raman shop were we managed to communicate our needs and had a good feed of Raman. Jess had an early mark and joined us at about 1:30pm. We walked to the post office to get some cash from the ATM. It is interesting that cash is king in this part of the world and apart from ...

We had a big day today. We set off about eight on the train to Fukushima. We planed to catch the Shinkansen from there to Sendai. Sadly the Shinkansen service was suspended, due to an incident, so we had to catch the slow train. That took about an hour and a quarter. We changed at Sendai for Matsushima, 3rd on the list of beautiful places in Japan. It is not far from were Jess had done her stint as a volunteer ...

Today was meet the colleagues day. Jess took us first to the Board of education, where we met her supervisor and read the radiation meter (that morning about .02 micro Sieverts per hour - you get more in Manhattan). It was also interesting to see the tow poor guys who sit in the office and represent TEPCO ( the nuclear plant owners). They are there to be the face of the company and cope any flack from the locals. Great job! We then drove to Jess's high school where we met ...

We had an interesting start to the day. I set off for an early morning dip in the Onsen and was about to enter what had been the men's bathroom the night before when I noticed a pink curtain across the door. A quick revision of my Kanji indicated that overnight the men had become women. After looking around for the candid camera crew, I beat a hasty retreat to the door behind the blue curtain. Mum and Jess arrived a short time later and nearly freaked out thinking Dad ...
