Not much sleep really as everybody else was stirring and converting their beds to seats about 6 AM, and the breakfast sellers started touting. Gave in and got up around 8:30 and had breakfast. Got to the border station around 9:30. We all had to disembark without luggage, go through departure and Malay arrivals, then get back on the train. Whilst we are busy most of the carriages were unhooked, and everything cleaned including Mandy's breakfast. Arrived into Butterworth at around 2 PM, having...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia gregd999When we finally rolled over in the morning, we found that it was 11:15! The room was dark, cool and quiet so we just slept through breakfast. After getting organised we walked down to Komtar, had lunch of crepes and waffles, exchanged some more money and hopped onto the decrepit number 93 bus to Batu Ferringhi. Walked through the town and an adjacent fishing village, and along the beach to the Penang Muttiara where I stayed on my previous visit. Had an expensive coke next to the pool, then wa...

Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia cagonu... customs on the Thai/Malay border (I said before that the Thais will charge for anything, I didn't mention that they sometimes charge you for nothing too) the 12 hour journey was uneventful. We arrived in Penang and Vic and I joined forces to hunt for a cheap guesthouse.
It turns out that cheap wasn't the problem. Good was, and after the first place we visited things went downhill. At one place a guy had a go at us for asking to see the room, and ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia jamiemeasures... friends visited Penang. We wish we had met him earlier so we could have seen more and learnt more about the island.
Again we had weird street food. The island seems to be just made up of Indians and Chinese people, so the food stalls are a mix of Indian and Chinese food (but not the nice sweet and sour chicken type chinese food!)

The next morning our friendly taxi driver from the day before took us to the ferry pier for our journey to Langkawi.
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia theharrisons... to entertain! The first night we had Tom Yam Soup from a stall where you pick all you own ingredients from a wide array and put them in a dish, which you then hand over. It gets cooked in some sort of broth and delivered to your table! Delicious, and probably quite good for you! Unfortunately, J later struck up a cosy (but less healthy) rapport with the man who deep fries all his food. As a result we have also had a lot of deep fried tofu, spring rolls ...
Georgetown, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia jenandtony... good guy. He’d been working on Phi Phi as a dive master for four months, and was just heading to Penang for his visa run. His scowls were caused both by boredom (he’d done this journey a few times before) and by a blazing hangover (as we all know, Thailand divemasters swim around by day and chase tourist girls in bars by night). Having snapped out of my morning moodiness, the company was appreciated and helped pass the time as we went ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia lnb203... of colonial influence. The shuttered windows and covered pavements really remind me of Cape Town, and that's a very good thing, trust me. The comparisons with places already travelled don't end there. Penang is massively influenced by China, much like Vietnam. Most striking of all is the size of Chinatown (where we're staying), it's huge. The streets are busy and the sound of whiny chinese music seeps through the windows of the ...
Pinang, Malaysia stephen.j.booth... Lane (popular backpackers place). We found a very nice hostel for a decent price. Definately the best place we have stayed so far by a mile, the place is quite modern so thats why. Last night we went to a market and had some nice food. We then went to a hong kong bar and met some very friendly people. Had a game of jenga in there and had a photo taken with everyone in ...
