Punta Arenas - The empty city :) We got to Punta Arenas at Christmas eve the streets was empty, the stores was closed and the birds stopped singing... At Punta Arenas we slept at 21 years old couple with a little baby girl, they were so nice to us. they did a Christmas dinner so they asked everybody who wonted to join to pay a minimal price and they made a big dinner - with meat no one could cut with a knife or chew... but it was a nice gesture and after dinner they gave everybody in the host...
Punta Arenas, Chile ronamaykSunday, December 31, 2006 A Memorable Celebration Dear Readers: Toto is on the move today, as we leave Santiago headed for the beachfront towns of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. The drive is through beautiful hills and vineyards. As we travel it gets cloudier and grayer, and we notice that people are wearing jackets when we reach the ocean. Stepping off the bus for our first walkabout in Valparaiso we understand why - it is darned cold outside. And we're in t-shirts and shorts! There is a hasty...
Vina del Mar, Chile malvada... we spènd the evening in a lovely little tea shop. honestly though i have never been this cold, really, i know i exagerate but i feel like this must be new york in the winter time or something.... i wore like all the clothes i brought and was still freezing.
Vina del Mar, Chile peacharooHola Todos!

Yesterday, (which was Wed. June 17), I went to my first class, came back to mi casa para almuerzo (lunch), and then returned in the afternoon for my second class. After classes, all of the students from the exchange program (around 30 from the U.S.) took a walking tour through the some of the hills of Valparaiso known as Los Cerros de Concepcion, and we saw a little bit of Los Cerros de Alegre. We rode an ...
Vina del Mar, Chile etroesch... red was actually a very acceptable "Conche y Toro Export" costing all of £2.00 ! - We went there again. Three streets away from our pad was a street market selling fruit & fresh fish & just round the corner was an on-street flee market. The local park was not up to the standards we were used to in Argentina & Peru. The park benches had very few slats left in them, the statues had graffiti all over them & the pavements were absolutely ...
Valparaiso, Chile chris-barbara... the more upmarket part of the area, a bit like Surfers Paradise. There were sand sculptures near the hotels and hundreds of bottles in the sand. It was pretty quiet but there were people everywhere, just sitting around talking. We hung out for a while, heading back to the hostel around 5.30am. Walking back from the bus back up the hill, the streets were packed with young people still out partying. Checkout at the hostel was ...
Valparaiso, Chile danasv... After an admin morning (traveling is not all play after all!) we headed up the coast to Concon. Concon consists of 6 beaches and the taxi driver conned us by taking us to the furthest most horrid one. We rapidly jumped in a bus back to one of the nicer ones where we enjoyed watching the pelicans over lunch. Big portions of fish and stunning coastline meant that walking most of the way back to Vina was a wonderful way to finish ...
Vina del Mar, Chile kingsandems... here is spectacular, sunny and not too hot. Oh yeah, today was September 11th. The date is memorable here not because of 2001, but rather 1973 when Chilean president Allende was overthrown and killed leading the way for dictator Pinochet. The US government wanted this overthrow and probably help to make the conditions possible. There were supposedly some protests in Santiago but I didn´t notice anything in Valparaiso.
Casablanca, Chile gt4715b... so when we went down to the main square where all of the different branches of the military were out in full uniform ready to parade. It took a while to get started as they were waiting on the president to arrive, we stood around looking at them for a few hours then got some food and went back to the hostel. When we got back we were talking to 2 girls from Australia who had witnessed guards using water canons and tear gas on protesters just outside ...
