Historical Traveler Reviews of Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square Albany
Excellent Room and hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
I actually was at the Sheraton Manhatten just over a year ago for business but I felt I had to lend my comments to this page. First all the check-in was quick and smooth, no problems as it must have taken only about 4 or 5 minutes to sign in, grab the keys and hit the elevators.
The biggest surprise was when I got to the room. I had a room on the 5th floor over looking 7th ave. The room was very large, queen size bed with a sofa and small sitting area. The bathroom was very clean and efficient. All towels were replaced everyday and the bed was made up perfectly. The bonus with this room was that it had a large balcony the over looked 7th ave. This was fantastic as it had a table and 2 chairs.
The balcony must have been 10ft by 10ft. I didn't know that the building even had balconies so it was a great surprise. The only downside was that the airconditioners were those standalone types that are against the wall. It cooled the room enough but was on the noisy side but it was not a big problem.
Overall I had a great experience at this hotel and if given the chance I would definitely stay there again. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to stay in midtown.
Loved the Sheraton Manhattan
from A TripAdvisor Member
I had read some not so great reviews about the Sheraton Manhattan so was quite nervous about our stay. It turned out to be great. Got a great price on Hotwire. Upon confirmation of my room was told they only had a queen size bed available (I had wanted two beds.) They told us we could get a roll away for no extra charge. The first night a roll away was not available so they gave us the choice of moving to a smoking room with two beds. My daughter perfered to sleep on the floor then in a smoking room. They provided us with extra bedding and three free breakfast coupons for the great breakfast buffet. Overall, the room was clean and roomy. Staff very friendly and helpful.
I loved NY
from GoGirl07
I loved being in NY, and I loved being so close to EVERYTHING! This hotel was GREAT for the price. We were able to walk to many hot spots and had a fantastic time. There are 2 for sure,(probably more) Starbucks within one block of this hotel. The staff was EXCELLENT and always very friendly and pleasant. The indoor pool was a hit with the kids and gave us a great break from the hustle and bustle. We would leave the hotel each day(we stayed for 7 days) at about 9:00 A.M. and did all the typical sight seeing one could do. We would return to the hotel at about 5:00 P.M. and the kids would swim for an hour or so. We would then head back out for dinner or to Times Square to a show or to just people watch. The location is safe and very convenient. While we were there many high school music groups were staying at the hotel. They had been invited to play and perform at Carnegie Hall and /or Lincoln Center. Carnegie Hall is about 6 blocks away. I would DEFINITELY stay here again!!!
Disapointed at christmas!
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stay here over Christmas and was very disapointed! Terrible cramped room with no view at all. Took a red eye flight from California and I had to wait nine hours to get my room. Asked if they could watch my luggage or store it until my room was available and they flatly refused. For the price we paid it was a total rip off and I will never stay at another Sheraton again anywhwere.
Great stay

I had checked out the visitor reviews after booking this hotel through Hotwire and they didn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm. However, after staying, I realize they must have hit the hotel at a bad time or had exceedingly high expectations, since everything about my stay was smooth as silk from check-in to check-out. The staff, both front desk and pool, were very friendly and accomodating. I had no problem changing the king room I'd booked to two double beds, which by the way, were exceedingly comfortable and well-appointed. I traveled with my children and when my daughter didn't want to sleep in the same bed with her brother one night, she plopped down on the floor with the amazing comforters and slept like a baby. She also gives the pool five stars.:)My only complaint is the lack of storage in the room--as in dresser drawers. The space usually left for dressers in the armoire that holds the TV was taken up by the minibar, coffee maker etc. Overall, though, it was an excellent experience. Great location, nice room, very cool pool and fitness area. Would definitely stay there again.
Sheraton lived up to its promise
from A TripAdvisor Member
We were a bit nervous about NYC hotels being dingy and overpriced ,after reading some reviews ,but we needn't have worried. The Sheraton made us feel good from the outset. Prompt friendly check-in by cheerful lobby staff ; the room might have seemed a tad small but that was only because of the King-sized bed which was fabulously comfortable ; room and bathroom were both spotless and ,in general, the hotel lived up to its own assessment of itself. I would have no problem recommending the Sheraton to anyone visiting NY. It also scores highly for its location in the theatre district and is convenient for transport. We will be visiting again and will stay here again as they contributed to the overall great time that we had.
I aggree with london

I agree. I was one of the people that worked at that hotel after 9/11. all we kept saying was if i had paid to stay at that hotel was we would have demanded our money back. The hotel was so dirty and old. The bathrooms smelled of mildew. They were always working on them for some leak or another. i would never stay in that hotel if someone gave me the room for free. i will say that the food in russo's was good. but that was about it. Everythings was soooo dated.
Enjoyable stay

I stayed in a double room in March 2003 and have to disagree with the two previous comments. Our room was extremely clean and nicely furnished, the maid service is daily and is of a high standard. The staff were very friendly & courteous, nothing was too much trouble providing excellent customer service. A good atmosphere in the hotel bar and the food in Russo's restaurant is average price for the location of the hotel. We had lunch there on the last day, but if we had tried it earlier, we probably would have returned. Overall, the hotel exceeded my expectations for the price paid (what I felt was a very good deal). Great location close to Times sq, broadway etc. I would definately stay there again and am planning on returning next year. Hope you have enjoyed reading my comments!
Disappointment
from A TripAdvisor Member
I have read teh review written by another unfortunate guest. I stayed there for 2 nights in September 2002, and cannot agree more. The Club room was drab and expensive. The bathroom had nor been cleaned thoroughly in years, with dirty tiles and tomato ketchup stains on the door, which were not removed despite my complaining to the reception. There was mildew growing on the bathroom ceiling!!
The complimentary breakfast was good, but the lounge was unwelcoming and the air conditioning was at full force.
I would not recommend anyone to stay here, and it has coloured my view about the Sheraton chain.
When sheraton shut down and downgrades its standards at its flagship location
from A TripAdvisor Member
i booked the Sheraton Manhattan for 2 nights on the 8/14/2002,in a double/double club room.
The Sheraton manhattan is located accross the street facing the sheraton's flagship in NY, and constitutes in fact its annex. This configutation explains maybe why the hotel gives an impression of a lack of management or supervision.
after 9/11 the sheraton Manhattan was rented as an office building for companies that were relocated from downtown Manhattan.
While huge 'money' was done during that period, when the hotel restarted its regular operations nothing was done at least to refresh the rooms, or renovate the public areas: the carpets in the rooms and public areas are dirty, faded and stained, the furniture of my club floor(20 th) room outdated scratched and some items out of order.
the bathrooms (not renovated the last 20 years...!!) -even if properly cleaned by the housekeeping- give an image of a third world standard as the tubs are stained. one person can hardly move in the bathroom and contrary to what the hotel's website indicates there is no separate shower.
the elevators (one of them under renovation during my stay)are dangerous for children and exasperate users by their irrational and operation .
the only privilege extended to the club floor guests consists to a complimentary 'continental' breakfast wich is under any acceptable standard. first of all the club lounge gives the impression of a gloomy and abandoned place with a bar that does not operate any more for drinks/cocktails etc...as the club lounges used to.
some bakeries that were served where baked the day before... obviously the F/B manager who is based accross the street at the new york sheraton and towers, does not supervise his team and does not leave the lobby located Russo's restaurant.
there is a swiming pool with an open air terrace, and again due to the lack of renovation and maintenance gives the impression of a dirty place. i noticed o lack of control as the intendant disappears from time to time and i noticed the presence of people ,obviously, not guest at both sheraton's hotels....in any case be alert with your kids!!
however i must point out the efficiency of the bellboys and generally the human potential of the staff wich gives the impression to be skilled/willingly/ready to serve but without interaction with the higher management.
this hotel could be potentially one of the best hotels in manhattan if renovated and managed properly.
