... after John Hay didn't even have photos of his home in Salem, Indiana. Before leaving for Arizona I painted the Hay house in Salem for Virginia Martin who had promised to have it painted as part of her museum duties. Gayle from the library was very pleased to receive photos of John Hay's birthplace that I had brought to her. I had taken the photos on a trip home to Indiana for Thanksgiving in 2007. Blue faced Leister and Tunis Sheep, I said goodbye to Liz, Bill and friends and headed back to New London, Connecticut to stay with my very good friends, Vivian and Jerry who have have known since 1994 ...

... tickets can be purchased at the mansions and are packaged by the number that you want to see. They assume that you want the Breakers so we chose the "Breakers and one other mansion" option. Both of these are self guided tours. They give you a box and headset as you enter. You can go at your own pace and have the option to go in depth on things in the rooms if you like.

We were up and about early and whilst it was still very cold, the sky promised us a nice, fine day. We knew from the map that there was a naval complex nearby, but it wasn’t until we heard the early morning bugle call that we realized that it was literally just across the road from us. Once breakfasted and packed up, we exited Wal-Mart’s car park and got straight onto the Newport Bridge, which was just across ...

... and work backwards. Our first stop was the place where the Pilgrims had first touched foot on American soil on 11th November 1620. There isn’t really a lot to see other than a plaque, the sea and the coastline, although there did appear to be an unusually high concentration of gay male couples about, we’re not sure why.

Herring Cove Beach was our next stop, where we parked up by the beach and sat having our lunch whilst enjoying the view and watching ...
