Historical Traveler Reviews Sheraton, Guilin

Best Hotel of our trip

from Roysta

The Sheraton, Guilin is a fabulous hotel.

We spent two weeks in China in February 2006 and this was our favourite hotel.

The English skills of the desk staff were superior.

The room was fabulous, general cleanliness was great.

During meals the service was prompt and efficient.

If only all hotels could be what we experienced here.

Good Choice

from chas58

Stayed here as part of a tour package so I can't compare prices with anything else in Guilin. We were placed on the Starwood preferred floor - I don't know if the rooms there are any different from others in the hotel. Our room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was well-appointed. Everything was spotlessly clean. The buffet breakfast was an enormous variety of Chinese and Western foods. The hotel is nicely located along the Li River. We felt perfectly safe in this neighborhood and would definitely stay here again.

Thought it was very good and enjoyed stay very much

Great hotel

from GemL_K

Stayed here for 4 nights in August 2005.

We had a great stay and our room was upgraded for free to a superior room. We had two big very comfortable double beds, the air con was great and the bathroom very clean and in good condition.

The hotel arranged our tours and everyone we met that worked there was very friendly. Spent a lovely day by the pool on comfy sun loungers.

Had a few evening meals here - both in the buffet and via room service and these, along with breakfast were great.

Would definitely recommend this place 100%!

Not worth the money

from exobscurislux

For the price and for claiming to be a Sheraton, this hotel needs help! We found the room dirty, with broken tiles, moldy grout and a terrible, moldy smell throughout the room. The air conditioner did not work and we could not get it fixed. The workout room was horrible and, again, with no A/C. For the buffet breakfast, they charged you for water - crazy given the rate! We tried to fill out a comment card, but were told that they didn't have any! Probably because they don't want to receive the bad reviews. I would stay at the Waterfall over this property any day of the week!

Good located

from Suzhou

Hallo,

This hotel is very well located, just in front of the Li river. The hotel and the staff is nice. It is similar to the radisson hotel in Fresno. The room doors are facing the great lobby that has no ceiling until the last floor. The atmosphere is pretty nice. The breakfast had croissants, donuts, cheese, ... Everything that an european would like.

Nice but not Great

from anonymous

Our group spent two nights at the Guilin Sheraton in early June. We all had nice rooms but they could use some modernization. The hotel staff was outstanding. The reasturant was just OK too - much better and much cheaper food in the local restaurants behind the hotel. The pool was less than inviting. I expected so much more from a Sheraton.

Lots of seedy people lurking outside the hotel. Our guide warned us to be aware of pick-pockets in the market place and at local attractions.

All and all not a bad stay.

Tired but comfortable

from rpaden

Our room was nice and the service was good. As was the case in Beijing, the a/c had not been turned on for the season and the rooms were stuffy. Stay away from the main dining room, our dinner was was not good. We should have figured this out since we were the only diners in this huge room. However, the western buffet served in the morning was excellent.

The hotel has a beautiful courtyard with gold fish pond, waterfall, and gold statues. It is well located across the street from the Li river, and near Fubol Hill, Seven Seas park, and great shopping. In the morning on the waterfront, locals were practicing tai chi, ballroom dancing, and swimming across the river. The locals were very friendly and the city is great.

Good hotel

from Kinnik

Well located, just ten mins walk from seven-star park. Food was good, breakfast buffet had a good choice and the hotel has a nice cafe area with an excellent selection of teas. Service was consistently good. Room was a good size, but not luxuriously furnished. Hotel is a little 70s and showing it at the edges. Nonetheless, probably the best hotel in Guilin and we would definitely go back there.

The best part of downtown Guilin

from Shpilkes

Spent two nights here on vacation in November 2004. The hotel is a little old but the rooms are still nice and well-appointed. The staff is top-notch--best I encountered in mainland China, from the bellmen to the concierge to the cleaning crews, with the exception of the can't-be-bothered night shift at the front desk. The food is pretty bad; try some restaurants in the pedestrian mall behind the hotel instead.

I found Guilin to be the least welcoming city in our large China tour. While the attractions are worthwhile, there are more hustlers and seedy scenarios here than in other cities, and I didn't love exploring Guilin on foot. Within this environment, the friendly, helpful employees of the Sheraton really stood out as a cut above and made our stay a pleasant one.

Rumor is a Shangri-La hotel is opening in Guilin in 2005 or '06. Curious to see if the Sheraton renovates to keep up with the competition.

Chillin' Guilin

Guilin is a beautiful place and we loved it. Our guide (Helen) was passionate about her city and showed off the best of it.

Left the hotel at 6.00am. Too early! The hotel (Golden Flower Shangri La) was very good to pack us a little breakfast to take away. Took about an hour to get to the airport. Long queues to check in and security, but …

Guilin Day 1

Well even though I am showing this as Day 2 it is really our first full day here in Guilin. Arrived about 8:30 pm and was picked up at the airport by Leizie and Mr Wong the driver. It takes about 45 minutes from the airport to the hotel. Kathy and I were both really tired and all we wanted to do was get into our room and go to sleep. The room was …

Guilin

Guilin is an extraordinary 'small' city. The lakes and rivers and all the lit-up pagodas, etc. are fascinating. The Li River cruise was excellent - there are so many unusual sites.
