Bangkok - Meanwhile.....

"Why isn't our flight listed on the board?" Clearly this is not a great start to a trip - no sign of QF 339 on the flicky flick board at the airport. Even a Qantas person looks remarkably confused until I mention it is a Jetstar flight to Bangers, though they soon point us to the queue for JQ 029. The flight is delayed by one hour, due to a "auxilliary mechanical malfunction which has been rectified". I joking ask if that means its going to fall out of the sky, and I'm reassured that it is a ...

I'm Alive!

January 14, 2005 After a short stay in San Diego, and then a hectic ride for my Uncle and me around LA, I finally made it to the Sheraton Hotel for our pre-service Staging Conference. I seem to have an inclination for natural disasters, and the week worth of rain that I was able to enjoy in San Diego was followed by mudslides and flooding, canceling my train ride to northern LA and forcing my Uncle Ray to embark on a two-day driving binge that should qualify him for canonization. The Staging ...

Bangkok Day 3: Floating Market & Rooftop Dining

We met our guide and driver at 7:30 AM and boarded our van for the 1.5 hour drive to the floating market at Dumnoen Saduak. He told lots of stories of good restaurants and his tour guide business and answered my questions about Thai boxing. Dee slept for a good portion of the drive as she normally falls victim in a moving car. We got a glimpse of the Thai countryside and smaller towns on the way. We arrived at the long tail boat dock by about 9:00. The boat ride was another 15-20 minutes wit...

Last days... mixed feelings... heavy bags!

First off, there was no tsunami yesterday, nor any bombings. Nor any gastrointestinal terror attacks. Just a tad of homesickness :) Meiling: It is my last day in Asia today - at 6pm I'll be on a flight to London (by way of Bahrain). I'm flying Gulf Air... ever heard of it? Me neither. I wonder what food they will serve me. As long as it wasn't made with fish sauce and oyster sauce I really don't care. Maybe kebabs? This morning we decided to celebrate my last day in style and we headed off to...

Bangkok

Here we are in Bangkok almost at the end of our 6 month trip. We left David's mum's house in North Wales one week ago on a typical English summer's day; cool and rainy. The garden, at least, benefitted from all the rain and the Agapanthus (originally from our Gold Coast garden) are thriving. We love Bangkok and even though it is hot, humid and polluted it has great energy. Just walking around and enjoying the perfume of the jasmine, frangipani, incense and food being cooked at street stalls ...

TUK'N FOR A RIDE in BANGKOK!

Bangkok or Krung Threp as it is more correctly known and spelt out fully in Thai requires 167 characters of the European alphabet and the Thais claim it is the longest place name in the world. All of that simply means City of Angels, just like Los Angeles. However we believe the longest place name in the world is back home in NZ, we just can't remember all of it. Heathrow to Bangkok is an 11 hour flight, during which Thai Airways ply their passengers with copious offerings of alcohol, presuma...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok Hotel

Great Location, Great Deal

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great location. Across the road from the new subway station and skytrain take the high pressure traffic out of the equation for easy trips to Chatuchauk, Lad Prao, Chao Prya & Sala Daeng areas. Easy trip to the airport as well.

The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit also has a decent bar with various pop/top 40 bands and a relaxed jazz bar called "The Living Room" with a good trio or quartet always on show. '

Don't stay at the Sheraton if you are looking for a great view of the city. Better views are to be had from the roof of the Banyan Tree or on the river at the Peninsula or the Oriental (fantastic hotels). Sukhumvit is handy for folks who want to get to cratfy places or be at a boutique high end mall in an area with plenty of Thai and foreign restaurants everywhere.

Buffet isn't bad either! Enjoy.

Fantastic

I have stayed here several times, and recently only 2 weeks ago. This hotel is excellent. The service is consistently second to none, the rooms modern and spacious and the facilities, including gym, restaurants, etc as good as any in Bangkok. Combined with a great location what more could one want? I woudn't stay anywhere else . A truly 5 star hotel.

5 star hotel all the way.

from icem2829
Where else will you find a dowtown 5 star for hotel for 120.00 a night? I do realize Thailand is known for great deals, but this was insane. A hotel like this in New York ( which does not exsist, at least not in the quality of serice) would probably cost around 5 or 6 hundred a night. From the moment you walk you in the service is great. Check in was easy, fast and polite. The rooms were large, elegant ,with superb bathrooms, and incredible views (some rooms). Room service was extenstive, fast and inexpensive. The spa was also great.. with a large number of services to choose from, many at prices for less then a cab ride in the states. I have heard some people complain about the size of the pool area. It is quite small for the number of rooms, luckily I was there when the hotel was not full. However, it is gorgeous.. a tropical oasis matched by few resorts I have seen... and never in the middle of a major city! And the poolside service is outstanding. ..although somewhat more pricey then other aspects of the hotel. I didnt get to eat or drink and any of the restaurants or bars in the hotel, although they looked very nice and modern. I highly rec this hotel for anyone wishing to stay in a centralized bangkok hotel near the action.

Excellent modern, comfortable hotel but small outdoor area

from sanchrts
I visited the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit in December 2004 and was pleased overall with my experience there. SERVICE was excellent with friendly and willing staff. ROOM was very clean with good facilities and a massive bathroom. Bed was very comfortable and large too. AMENITIES on offer were all very good (restaurants, bars, tour facilities, transport). OUTDOOR SPACE was the only concern - in Bangkok you really do need some outdoor space in which to relax and in which you can take a dip in a pool but in the Sheraton Grande the nicely-landscaped open area is not big enough and does not have nearly enough loungers for the number of rooms. Be prepared therefore to sit on the ground very close to other guests or find somewhere else to cool-down! LOCATION whilst not on the river I really liked staying in Sukhumvit due to the large number of excellent local restaurants, the proximity to the Skytrain (Asok station) and large number of buses and taxis that ply Sukhumvit towards central Bangkok.

Wonderful, Wonderful

A great example of a 5 star property. Staff was excellent. Wished all Luxury Properties were this level!

Location is excellent but beds are too small for twin

from Hola
Have been spending our time here during X'mas. Location wise, it's really excellent, just a step to get on the Asok BTS, which is connected directly to Sukhumvit station of Mass Rapid Transit, which makes almost every places connected, and saving a lot of time in transitting for BTS at the Siam station or getting stuck on a taxi running on the Sukhumvit.

Rooms are really spacious and I have an excellent view overlooking the river, so cozy environment it is. However cannot expect such a small bed size for the twin bed room, where it is only a 3ft x 6 ft one, which I think this should only happen in Japan.

Swimming pool is a very small one, though they have a nice setting like tropical forest. Maybe it's because of the festive season that the sun beds are closely packed together and are not enough for its hotel guests.

Wonderful hotel

from Bats-73
We stayed in the Grande Sheraton Sukhumvit in October 2004 for 4 nights as part of a five week honeymoon. Out of all the 4 - 5 star hotels we stayed in on our trip, this one was the best.

Firstly, the location was excellent, so close to the efficient sky train.

The room was beautiful, very tastefully decorated, very spacious and comfortable. We had room service twice, which was pretty good, nicely presented, quick and inexpensive.

The jazz bar in the hotel was very sophisticated and made you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city outside.

As it was our honeymoon we arrived to find they had left us some red roses in our room and a lovely cake, saying 'happy honeymoon' - which was a nice touch.

The staff were wonderful, very polite and they treated us so well, made us feel special and very much a 'guest' of the hotel (I find that some large hotels leave you feeling like just a number).

The poolside Sala was beautiful and peaceful - a real haven of tranquillity.

Finally the nigtly turn - down service and orchid left on your pillow finished the day off perfectly.

I wouldn't consider any other hotel in Bangkok.

One of the best options in BKK

from MemberfromPadova
I have frequently travelled to Thailand and have always chosen this hotel since I discovered it. Staff is corteous, friendly and efficient. The hotel has large, comfortable rooms in pristine conditions. Its location is one of the most convenient you can find in the business district. The buffet breakfast and food in general are excellent. Well-deserved 5-star rating and one of the best Sheraton I have ever stayed in.

Great hotel, wonderful service, large rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent 9 days at this hotel. The service was great, the rooms are huge and the location can't be beat. Just steps away from the subway and the sky train, near shopping and restaurants. Room service was quick and the food was very well prepared. The restaurants (Basil and Rossini's) were also excellent. Try the soft shell crab and the breakfast buffet!

Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit - An Oasis in a Buzzling City

from A TripAdvisor Member
I've stayed in this hotel several times, and the latest one was in Dec 2003. It's location is just perfect right at the BTS Asok Station, and at the exit of the Expressway to the Airport. Decoration is ambient and rooms are large with own walk-in closet. Bathrooms are large with bathtub and separate shower cubicle.

The swimming pool, though a bit on the small size, is just an oasis in this buzzling city! It is a free from pool with tall plants around makes you feel like you're in a resort in Phuket! They even have music under water! The pool-side cafe served excellent cocktails and snacks. I could just lie there all day and relax... there was never a crowd at the pool!

What makes it stand out is the service at the reception ~ they knew which room I've stayed last time and made the effort to let me have the same room again on my second visit!!

An excellent hotel which I'll return times after times whenever I'm in the City!
