Pumkins Everywhere

... easy and not force myself to run up and down mountains! It's okay to take a day off I beleive. In acknowledgement of my cold, I decided I should have a proper meal at a proper table, and just enjoy some good food!
I ordered what is considered a pasta that is chacter to Ferrara. and It was breaktakingly sumptous! A type of ravioli with Pumpkin inside drizzled all over with a butter and sage sauce. I ate these ...

Bologna

Short train ride from Florence after a hair raising trip trying to return the rental car in confusing, congested and traffic restrictied Florence (don't rent a car downtown go to the airport). Bologna is an university town (even Johns Hopkin has a campus). Very historical town with a great plaza area like most towns and a great antique market.

Tour de Bologna

The book, the cursed book known as Lonely Planet advised as follows: cycling has become a popular tourist activity in Bologna. Rent a bike from this or that place, and ride Ferrara, following these road signs. Okay, Mandi and I thought. We're fit, we're active, we can do this. We rented bikes and with fantasies of idyllic rolling hillsides, endless vineyards, and fields full of wildflowers set off on ...

It Had to End Sometime

... getting into detail, I started to see social problems that are inherent in all societies.

But after leaving, I suddenly recall with fondness certain things that characterize Italy to me. My favorite pizzeria, with its wood-burning stove and unbelievably thin crusts, created works of art for me every time I went there. There were times that I became so sick of pizza that I couldn't eat it, but I always ended up regaining my appetite for it. The sight of ...

pre-departure musings -or- is this thing on?

hello friends. this is just a small preface to what i hope will become a collection [a veritable treasure chest, if you will] of tales, anecdotes and photos of our round-the-world adventures and debaucles. before we start, i'd just like to get this out there: i hate the word "blog". it literally makes me itchy. [no, seriously...what does it even mean? and why is it acceptable ...

A Banana In Bologna

... just get off at Bologna. He then (amazing man that he was) got me an expresso. At Bologna, I went to Customer Care, where I explained that Canadians aren't very smart and I had gotten on the wrong train. They laughed, told me, no worries, all road lead to Rome (ha ha), and printed me up a new ticket, and told me to go wait on platform three, where I ate the bananas I had bought ...

My first full day in Bologna

... us that Bologna is known for its many portici (porticos) where people can walk in shade or be protected from the rain. Bologna is also known for its 2 towers that I will speak of later. We walked through the Piazza where they would later show a Charlie Chaplin film outside. There were posters with "Chaplinariana" on them. I think the Italians like Chaplin a bunch, for some reason. We next sat at an outside bar for an ...

... of day-trippers pouring out of the streets away from Piazza delle Erbe, and we somehow missed Verona’s most famous tourist spot, Juliet’s mythical balcony from that Shakespeare play, in the small amount of time we had to meander the streets. But we had to press on because dinner was waiting.

Heading westwards to Brescia and then making for Iseo (a town on a lake of the same name) without any real idea of where we were going, we were hampered ...

... for dinner. It’s a beautiful spa town and smells good! I took a long walk through the park and had a Gran Marnier on the patio. Peggy had Amaretto which pleased the bartender/host. He didn’t like my ordering a French liqueur! The hotel was one of the nicest on our tour.

We left our window open and it was actually cold when we got up!
