We had brunch today as we arrived in port around noon. Once again our local guide's name is Nadia and she took us on a tour of the town. First up was a local school. School wasn’t in session, but the assistant principal who also teaches spoke with us with Nadia translating. The school is a two story building that houses all grades. It was very interesting as the educational system has changed somewhat following the collapse of the USSR in ...

No, despite the title, not a monk's cell.

Judging from what we saw of the monastery, St Cyril -- or Kirill -- had plenty of those in what sounds like a pretty strict monastic regime.

I mean a far more rare and highly desirable phenomenon.

        A cell-phone-free school.

        Shock, horror!

        But first things first.

This morning we paid a visit to village of Kirillo named after St Kirillo (St Cyril). First, we went to see a school where we were shown around by a young girl who answered questions about the school. Her English was extremely good although she told us that she had only been studying it for three years. As it was Sunday, the school was not operating so we didn't get the chance to see classes or how the children behaved. We sat ...

We have jut set sail from the pretty little village of Goritsy, still about 600km from Moscow. Before we describe today, we should mention the Russian tradition of a stirring song being played as ships leave ports. This is to give good luck for a safe return. The songs have been stirring traditional songs or marching tunes until just now when they played something that sounded like a cross between ABBA and a country and western ...

... Vodka (on their second bottle) and as they served us a piece of pizza, they filled our shot glasses with about 3/4 of an ouce of vodka and made a toast to Sochi. It was actually very smooth going down. As one who doesn't do shots, I expected a bit of a burn or a gasp, but none of that. The pizza was quite good, just cheese and crust but some different cheese than we use and tasty. They refilled the shot glasses despite ...
