We have jut set sail from the pretty little village of Goritsy, still about 600km from Moscow. Before we describe today, we should mention the Russian tradition of a stirring song being played as ships leave ports. This is to give good luck for a safe return. The songs have been stirring traditional songs or marching tunes until just now when they played something that sounded like a cross between ABBA and a country and western ...

Sitting in the Business Lounge for Lufthansa Airlines, in Frankfurt. Winding back the clock a few days now. I have become a popular bartender in the region kind of by accident. We started making our own lounge just to get away from all of the other cameramen (100+) in a small beer tent. After making friends with Mark the Russian hotel employee/ bartender, we pretty much had the run of our own lounge. It was really great making a few Russian ...

It would drop us off right at the top of the two lifts going into the extreme park. Without it we will have to hike uphill about a mile in the snow on an active ski run (which doesn't seem to bother anyone), or schlepp to the other end of the village to catch a bus. They are killing me. I'm going to borrow a Russian parka and try again ...

    Word for today: ZDRAVSTVUYTE

Weather: Rain Clearing: Fog in the morning. 12 - 17

We sailed from Yaroslavl out into the Rybinsk Reservoir- a huge expanse of water linked by locks and canals. Then we sailed up the Sheksna River and arrived (a little late due to heavy fog) in the little town of Kuzino. Plans for the day's excursion had to be slightly shortened due to our late arrival. In all, there were 5 cruise ships at the pier so the ...

    Kirilov-Belozersky Monastery, Kuzino

Sunday, May 27, 2012: At this point, we are going steadily north. It is cool and getting cooler. The mosquitoes are – if possible – larger and hungrier than those we encountered in Uglich. When in the rivers or locks, it is not advisable to open the door to our veranda. About the only place one could safely open the veranda door was in the middle of the huge Rybinsk Reservoir.

We arrived in Kuzino and were transported by bus to the Kirilov-Belozersky ...
