... 60 meters high from lake level and advancing 2 meters a day. The impressive sound of chunks breaking off and tumbling into the lake, causing big waves. The transparant blue color, borrowed from the sky until it sinks into the milky grey water of the lake. The heat of the sun melts the icy peaks so quickly that we can actually see them change shape during the day. We spend several hours looking, walking, listening and taking pictures. Among hundreds of ...

It's also one of the few glaciers that is growing rather than shrinking, and it's quite common to see large chunks of it fall off. So we kept our eyes peeled. After an hour or so walking around and having lunch - which consisted of some tomato soup and big chunks of steak from the previous night's asado - we hopped back on the bus. The weather here is a little cooler but nothing too crazy. Many people certainly are not use to it and are bundled up beyond recognition. If your nose hairs aren’t freezing, you don’t know cold!!! I think today was about 9 degrees!! Although the wind did make it feel cooler.
The boat ride was 1 hour ...

... 180km, the Ironman bike distance, 10 minutes quicker than I did in my first Ironman! A few more hills in Switzerland than this part of Patagonia though! The added tailwind also helped! With some rather confusing directions from Nadine we got very lost trying to find the hotel she had booked into. Lots of door knocking and varied directions, in the end the poorly Nadine came out to find us! A lovely rest day spent at the piece de resistance of this part of Patagonia, Perito Marino ...

... the top I'm not the only one! By the day of our flight out I was ready to leave. Unlike the places we had been in Chile I had no desire to stay longer. The overt tourism of the town had left me feeling a little flat, and aside from the ice spectacular and pockets of family business life we had experienced I didn't feel a connection to the place. Maybe it was the knowledge I was one flight away from my next penguin encounter but as we headed to the airport I didn't look ...
