      ... Incredibly, we woke to still conditions and quite a bit of blue sky. It was Valda’s birthday, so we gave her some treats: a cup of tea in bed, the use of Merlin’s wonderful seat, a special brew of porridge (for all of us, thankyou!) and a tiny birthday cake with a red leaf candle and a bunch of flowers (dandelions).

      It was a stunning road, which had lots of wildlife like rheas and guanacos through what seemed like desert but couldn't really be one; or maybe it could be... the bus then took another 3 hours or so before we arrived at el Calafate. The drive in provided pretty stunning views of the town, which is in a valley between big hills, and on the side of Lago Argentina, a pretty big lake filled with birds.
