... day at the famous Mogao Grottoes.
These ancient Buddhist shrines contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning 1000 years. Known as the Thousand Buddha Caves, the site was first carved out in 366AD with more caves being carved out of the cliffs until the 14th century.
Many of the shrines were paid for by travellers on the Silk Road, about to face the dangers of the ...
... only see a handful of caves. The caves suffered badly at the hands of an earthquake so to support them new fronts were built but these looked like 60's style urban concrete so ruined any impression of gaining a feel for what they looked liked. The frescos inside the caves were amazing and there was a really cool HUGE Buddha but overall we left a bit disappointed.
Time for another long train journey.

From Jiayuguan we then went to Dunhuang which is really famous for its Buddhist Grottoes, and therefore it is quite the tourist attraction, and therefore, they have lots of western style restaurants!!! I had french toast for almost every meal... Anyway. We went to the Mogao Grottoes which has the second and third largest Buddhist sculptures in China; which were something like 120 feet tall? Which now that I'm seeing that it seems impossible but that's what the guide ...

The site was rediscovered in the early twentieth century by European explorers. The most infamous crime was the ransacking of the library cave when over 20,000 ancient documents were sent to the west. Defenders of the explorers or raiders claim that these documents would have been lost in the Cultural ...
Dunhuang, Gansu, China sylvainboisse... because we walked into the restaurant and everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at the foreigners. They kept catching glances until we were eating our noodles. Oh well, the food once again was good enough to be worth it. I am now curled up on my bunk again in an overnight train deciding when to go to sleep. I don't need to worry about making everyone be quiet early because I am in the ...

It was tough going with the sand slipping away beneath us as we scrabbled on, but eventually, panting and sweating, we reached the summit and sat for a long time watching the sun sink ov** the des**t and the black mountains beyond it. Dunhuang, Gansu, China danandlaura... The way the colors change during the process, especially in the desert, is incredible. We also had some time to explore the area in the daylight. At one point, a man came wandering by and we were afraid that he was going to yell at us for trespassing on private property or something, but he just passed by. It was nearing our pick up time, so we went back to the campsite to tidy things up. The pick-up time came and went and we ...
Dunhuang, China laowai_megan... cave number 17, aka the Library Cave, was only discovered in 1900 when it was found to contain thousands of Buddist Sutras, Confuscian texts and other priceless scrolls and documents about Chinese everyday life. In the space of about 20 years the vast majority of these documents ended up in museums across the British Empire, America, France, Russia and Japan. Sir Marc Aurel Stein alone purchased over 5,000 of them for only 130 GB pounds ...
