PD & Cairns

We arrived in PD early evening and checked in to our studio apartment before heading out to a lovely fish restaurant for supper.

We spent most of Sunday exploring the town and after much deliberation by Luce on the sea weather and wind forecast for Monday we booked up a boat trip out to the Great Barrier Reef.

We awoke to brilliant sunshine, much to Luce's relief! We were picked up early and headed down to the marina. The boat was quite full but luckily we were the on...

... black feathers, and red and blue heads. They have what looks like a horn on top of their head that makes them look positively prehistoric. And in fact, they have been around for a long time, just like the rest of the rainforest. But there are not many of them left. Only about 1,200 remain in the wild in Australia, most of them in Daintree Rainforest. They eat berries that would be poisonous to humans, and are not very friendly ...

Post the impact, I reclined back into nose bleed recovery position with a mouth full of soil (‘illegal soil sampling’ as our cycle companion Stuart put it, or ‘soil munching’ as Roelof put it!) and thought of the worst. Upon being attended to by Roelof and our cycle companions Stuart ...

Port Douglas

Hi all, The last outback journey went well. Taking turns to drive eased the boredom on long flat stretches and the 1500 mile trip to Port Douglas passed in 7 days with 1 day to rest in Townsville on the coast and 1 extra day on the way up the coast road due to a 5 hour delay to clear a 4 vehicle pile up, which blocked the only road through. The last day out of the Northern Territory took us past our final roadhouse and, thankfully the ...

On the other side was the rainforest which we had been told contained huge attacking lizards, a plant that attacks your nervous system, and water in these parts always holds the threat of crocodiles. We felt surrounded and decided we would take the stingers if we had to choose. Thankfully the water never got us boxed in and we enjoyed ...

... vineyard both days and we decided to go on the wild goose chase to the winery. Who doesn't love a winery, right? Well, we were wrong. We eventually took the many many turns off the main highway and reached the small winery that was run by a really sweet looking old couple. So far, so good. Unfortunately, all of the wines were really sweet and quite frankly terrible tasting fruit wines. We were given a choice - AUD5 for a tasting or ...

Employees are mostly high school kids or recent high school graduates looking to make some money before moving on with their lives. Needless to say it is a party atmosphere with very slow and unreliable help. So...a little disappointing after such a beautiful journey to get here. But, after they found a back up chef from one of the other hotels, and we had ...

So out here, on the Great Barrier Reef again, I took two more dives. The tuition was far more comprehensive than in the Whitsundays. We learnt about the science of diving, what happens to your body and the effects of pressure etc. We learnt more hand signals, more about the ...
