Bangkok to Ayutthaya to Bangkok, Thailand

Got up early. Don't know how I did it as I was extremely tired, but I did. Got ready, met the group downstairs at breakfast, ate, and we hopped into the vans. We drove quite a ways to Ayutthaya, it was a nice drive with none of the terrible traffic Bangkok is famous for! We arrived at Ayutthaya and saw a number of wonderful sights - a huge, I mean HUGE Buddha about 100 feet high, enclosed in a building that was renovated in 1974 or something like that. Pictures couldn't do justice. Then on to...

The cultural revolution continues

Another brief entry, just to say that the last 2 days have been a real cultural insight!! We spent Tuesday wandering around some of the markets - including the food market where you can buy everything from live fish to the skin of a pig!! In the evening we went to the Sichuan opera which included everything from fire throwing; mask changing,; silhouettes; flag dances; opera, puppetry and lots more. All washed down with lots of jasmine tea...it was fantastic and all for less than 4.00p!! WEdne...

Back to Bangkok...again

Hey all- So Chase and I headed to Bangkok after saying goodbye to Maria and Gemma. We met up with my parents at the airport. It was quite the emotional overload for me to have so many people I love in one place. From here, the pace and style of my travel changed dramatically for the next week and a half. Chase and I joined my parents in their airconditioned van from the airport. We were dropped off at our hotel, the Shangri La (yep, where I had my Oman interview) before meeting up with mom an...

5-star living

Gee it's a hard life! We've now made it to the Shangri-La hotel and it is flippin' amazing! Unfortunately internet access costs a bomb so this is a short one to end my trip. However after I get home on Saturday I've lots more stories to post along with some deep and meaningful bits and of course the photos! Thanks for all your comments, now that I've got away from China's firewall which prevents anything 'dodgy' (like blogspot blogs and the BBC news website!!!) I've been able to read them, an...

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster

Arrived in Bangkok on Monday mid-day from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon.) Angeline was waiting at the hotel for us. We are staying at the Shangri-La hotel on the Chao Phraya river in central Bangkok. It is a huge and crazy city. They are right-hand drivers which is strange (and makes even crossing the street confusing!) But the traffic is a bit more sane and organized than Vietnam. Not as much honking. Maryangeline has a friend that lives in Bangkok, Chai. He is a doctor at one of the downtown hos...

Bangkok Part 1

Thailand...the country that you visit once and want to return again, and again, and again... traveling to Thailand had not really been in our immediate plans, but then someone we know returned from there raving about the country...still under the influence of "ohhh!"s and "ahhh!"s and all the exciting stories of our acquaintance, we had our typical "destination selection" conversation: - maybe we should go there one day? - one day maybe...why not?... - why not now?... - now?...really, why not...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok

Very Nice

from myatroopa
We spent our first three days in Thailand at the Shangri-La. All around the room..which had a balconey..and service were superb. The breakfast buffet is good, especially while sitting outdoors. Also their afternoon tea is lovely. The Shangri-La has a bit of a faded glory. Some parts looked a bit rough around the edges. But over-all this is a great hotel. It is well located near ferries & skytrain. The surrounding area is very interesting.

Enjoy your stay!

Very romantic

from frozensky
We stayed here during January 2004. The hotel is very nice. There are actually two different towers, but they'll get you a golf cart to take you to the other one if you're at the wrong one. They're kind of next to each other. Our room had a view of the river and the pool down below. It's quite a romantic sight to be near the pool and river in the evening.

The best hotel we ever stayed in

from A TripAdvisor Member
Only one word to describe the Shangrila - FANTASTIC. It was right beside the sky train and the quay for catching the ferrys. Ideal location. Brilliant room overlooking the river. We upgraded and got both breakfast and a cocktail hour as part of the price. Well worth it.

Perfect hotel!

I loved this hotel from the start. After a very long flight from London we were greeted by some lovely staff. Even though we were earlier that you are supposed to be for checking in,our room was ready straight away. We stayed in The Krungthep Wing, well worth the extra money, fab views on the river and more luxurious room. The pool is lovely and perfect for chilling out, the restaurant called Salathip was perfect for our first nice overlooking the river. We had to keep telling ourselves that we were in Bangkok in a five star hotel having dinner on the river!!! Price for meal approx gpb 30.00 for 2 including wine so not too bad. However i have saved the best for last which is the brekkie, truly amazing, the best food in the world!! Dont miss it!

Pure Class

We booked the 3 night "River Romance" package and it far exceeded our expectations. Right from the limosine pick-up at the airport (Chilled towels and mineral water) through to the complimentary upgrade our stay was pure bliss. The room was enormous and the river views to die for. Each day free chocolates, mineral water and fresh fruit appeared. To get about the hotel offers complimentary cars and water taxi services, but is also a stone throw from the Sky Train - so Bangkok is at your door. The highlight was the dinner cruise (which was part of our package) great value and a great way to see the city. We'll be back!

One small warning: don't get trapped by the "tourism authority" guys at the airport - they offer "free" tours to several local attractions - while good value they are not free and they will try and take you to a number of expensive tourists shops under the guise of a city tour (very pushy and not fun)

Fabulous!

Just got back from a fantastic holiday in Thailand. We loved it so much we can't wait to go back. We spent the first 2 nights in the Shangri-la and were very impressed. It's pure class! Our room was huge and it was only a standard river view room. The only problem we had was that it had a mouldy smell when you went in. It was strange considering everything looked so new and clean. But I wouldn't let that put you off. Just spray some perfume around the place as we did.

I was overwhelmed the night we arrived as I was sitting in the jacuzzi with a glass of beer, and listening to the live jazz playing in the restaurant near-by, and there were little lights everywhere as it was dark, and I thought to myself this is what holidays are all about!

If you go to bangkok, I would recommend that you spend at least 3 nights there, as we found that our stay was too short, especially when you are staying at the Shangri-La!

Best Placed for Tourism

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is one of the finest hotels in Bangkok but it beats all the rest because it is uniquely placed 2 minutes from both the Bangkok Skytrain and the River Bus. The River Bus is the best way to get the the Grand Palace and all the important tourist sites. The Skytrain makes it easy to get rount the rest of Bangkok.

Not cheap but very good value.

Opulant !

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in the Kungthrep Wing, Riverview room. Lovely room interiors and bathroom, excellent service. Laundry service very expensive as is mini bar. These rooms have an excellent view of the river and fantastic views at night when everything is lit up. The Chi Spa is amazing but you have to keep your voice down to retain the ambiance (I got told off once when I got over excited about it telling my friend)....Thai restaurant really good and main pool fantastic. Staff quite formal...nice breakfasts. Staff also wear amazing uniforms, think King and I .......Posh Business Hotel....more comfortable and sumptous than the award winning Penninsula accross the river !

Good Night time entertainment in the italian bar and main cocktail lounge.

Fantastic stay

from alliebdive
We got off to a bad start. Off the 12 hour flight with 2 small children, one of whom had been sick all the way. We were tired, hot and covered in vomit. Had booked the room for the night before so we could move right in - arriving at 4 am. Got there - overbooked, no room, please wait till morning. Made a fuss, proffered screaming kids and were immediately ushered upstairs and given a suite for our stay in the plush Krangthup wing. From then on it was fabulous. Marvellous suite with double balconies overlooking the river. Wonderful beds and linen. The best bathroom I have EVER been in - huge, bronze and pink marble. Wonderful service. The pool was great to come back to every day- a peaceful oasis. Location was good for getting to everything. Would definitely return.

Great start to our honeymoon

from A TripAdvisor Member
We started our honeymoon to Australia with a 2 night stay here. Off to a good start with a free uograde to a superior river view room! Everything you could think of and want in the room. From a huge shower with multiple jets to fresh fruit and plug adaptors! The thai restaurant in the garden is superb and the hotel's dinner river cruise is worthwhile too - great food and views of the temples lit up at night. We had one day of rain and spent the afternoon relaxing in the airy spacious lounge having afternoon tea. The staff were excellent too. We would definitely stay here again.
