Historical Traveler Reviews of Shangri La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Taipei

Schönes Hotel

from marshalex

Nice hotel!

from marshalex
Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights recently.

The hotel is good and I really can not find anything to complain about. Regarding the location I would think that the Grand Hyatt hotel in Taipei would be much better choice as it is opposite the Taipei 101 and close to the giant shopping malls of Mitukoshi!

While this hotel is indeed excellent with nice staff and good rooms....I still think that the Grand Hyatt would be a better choice if you are in Taipei just for a few days for the touristy thing!

Excellent business hotel in a good location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in this hotel for two nights in January of 2006. The hotel arranged a pick up from the airport and whilst the man at the airport was efficient he was fairly brusque in his manner. The car and the driver were very courteous and the welcome at reception was delightful. The service throughout my stay was excellent and the staff couldn't do enough. My room was a very good size with a very comfortable bed, plenty of space and a great bathroom with full length bath and walk-in shower. The only criticism in the room was that the internet service was intermittent. Again the service at the hotel was excellent, they were aware of a fault and left me a message when it was fixed. Breakfast is the usual international buffet not bad but not exceptional. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Taipei.

Best Hotel in Taipei

Seriously there is no doubt in mind that this is the BEST hotel in Taipei. The Grand Hotel is for tourists- I'm Taiwanese and it doesn't remind me of Taiwan- it just reminds me of mainland China. The Far Eastern is in such a central location in the city, and it is really comfortable and a beautiful hotel. All my banker friends who goto Taipei for business always try to get the Far Eastern too. As an added bonus, there are so many great shops and restaurants in the area.

First Class all the Way

Stayed in this Wonderful hotel for about a week in early January 2005. I had an amazing room - huge with HUGE Marble bathroom with soaking tub and separate shower. Service was wonderful. Lots of "western" options on the room service menu if that is what you are looking for. Beds are amazingly comfortable. Fresh flowers and fresh fruit basket that were refreshed as needed. Area around hotel is fine - it is connected to an upscale but small mall which has a grocery store with take-out prepared food in deli area. A few restaurants and bars around. I did not take the subway, but I understand there was a stop not too far from hotel. But we found cabs in Taipei to be extremely reasonably priced.

Unexpected excellence

It must be my 20th trip to Taipei when I stayed in the Far Eastern in October 2004. I stayed there before in an ordinary guest room and was not impressed much. However, this time, I stayed in an upgraded room with a larger bathroom and walk-in closet. Overall, the experience is just superb.

The rooms are large, luxurious and very well maintained. There is good attention to detail. The service from all the staff I came across are simply excellent and very efficient. It was a comfortable and relaxing stay. The breakfast is sumptuous.

Compared to other hotels like the Westin or Grand Hyatt, I feel that the Far Eastern is actually quite good value, especially if you can find a deal that would upgrade you to one of those larger rooms.

One of my favorites

from Rabidpuppy
I regularly travel to many cities around the world for business and the Far Eastern ranks as one of my favorite hotels. One of the things that I expect from a 5 star hotel is consistency in service and, while no place is perfect, the Far Eastern ranks very high in this regard. I stay there about 10 times a year and I am rarely dissappointed. The rooms are getting a bit tired, and will, hopefully, be renovated soon. If this happens, I hope they will keep the decor in line with the current style, which is understated and modern, with dark woods and light colored carpets. I find this a refreshing change from some of Taipei's other top hotels, which have a tendency to be more garish in their design. The staff are similarly low-key, but are always there when you need them. On the down side, the room service in the hotel is only average, with a limited choice of food and inconsistent taste. However, there are many good restaurants nearby including, as discussed in a previous post, the People's Restaurant. Within the Far Eastern itself is a great buffet restaurant on the 6th floor which offers a huge choice of food whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Wonderful Stay!!

from v102377
We stayed at the Far Eastern for four nights last November. The hotel is wonderfully decorated and easily accessible. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Our reservation was for a king room, but upon our arrival (after 14hrs of traveling), our room was not ready. The front desk immediately put us in their standard room so we could freshen up and rest until our room was ready. At that time, they took our bags to our King room and gave us free breakfast for our entire stay. Now, the breakfast- my favorite part of the stay... it is served buffett style and it was DELIGHTFUL!!!! There was a huge selection and they had all types of global foods: Asian, European, American.. It was absolutely fantastic!!

Definitely recommend! Overall, it was a wonderful stay and I will return again!

Well up to the Shangri-La name

from MemberfromPadova
One of my favourite hotels in the Far East. Rooms are quiet, spacious and very well furnished. They have some of the most comfortable beds I ever experienced, which is priceless to me after a +15 hours flight from Europe. On my last visit I got upgraded to one of the top floor suites. Simply unbelievable. It's true, it is a bit expensive but its comfort is worth every penny if you are on a tiring business trip.

A quiet getaway within the city

from daijobu
stayed at the Far Eastern (Shangri-La) in 2000, and September 2003. Between the 2 visits, the hotel has aged a little, and the quality of the breakfast has declined to my disappointment. That said, this is a very nice hotel, and probably one of the top 3 in the whole of Taipei... much better than the eerie Grand Hyatt which is infamous for it's in-house poltergeist. The Far Eastern has a great roof-top pool with a breath-taking view of the city. Their gym is also very well-equiped. The rooms are very well-furnished and the bathrooms are huge with free-standing shower. I would recommend you asking for a room on the Club-floor. Location-wise, it is a few blocks away from the Tunhwa south road - a nicer shopping district in the Eastern part of Taipei. Nearby is the famous People's restaurant serving nouvelle chinese cuisine... I also recommend paying a visit to Eslite (one of taiwan's biggest and best-run book-store/shopping centers) - a 5 minute cab-ride away and is opened 24-hours. The bookstore allegedly is a real hot-spot for the college-crowd nowadays... probably more of a social-gathering place.

Back to the hotel... it's pricey. Usual price is around US$200+/night. If you can get it under US$150, it's a great deal.
