Greatly enjoyed Krungthep Wing of Shangri-La Bangkok

          Reviewed Dec 8, 2014

It was our second stay at Shangri-La Bangkok. Both times we stayed at their smaller, more exclusive Krungthep Wing. The rooms are spacious, each has a private balcony facing the river, so all you have to do is to request a higher floor to get wonderful views of Chao Phraya river. This time around we stayed on the 16th floor while our children - on the 9th floor, and the view was great from their room as well. If you stay in Krungthep Wing your rate includes not just breakfast (quite nice, with buffet as well as a la carte menu) but high tea and cocktail hour. Both were very good; unfortunately we did not attend them every day. Still - it's nice knowing that it is waiting for you if you want it. Service was very good as is expected from Shangri-La. The only minor thing was that our butler (our room included butler services) did not come to introduce himself like during our first stay. We arrived at midnight, so I don't count it against them. Besides, I could always call if I needed his services (which I did not). We had fresh fruit in the room every day, check-in and check-out was smooth and seamless, staff very attentive. I greatly enjoyed our first stay here as well as this stay, and if I return to Bangkok, I would not hesitate to stay here again (even despite Peninsula across the river being tempting :)
I never give 5 stars to any hotel (there should always be room for improvement), so - I give it 4 stars, but these 4 stars are truly well deserved!

The Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok was conveniently located on the Chao Phraya River. The hotel offers a boat launch to take residents to different piers. The hotel restaurant puts on an amazing buffet for breakfast and for lunch. Everything was presented well and tasted amazing.

Stayed in the Krungthep Wing and had a thoroughly good time. Personal butler, in room check-in and too many complimentary things to sample them all. Balcony overlooking the river, which seems to be busy almost all trhe day. Great meal at the Salathip and best breakfast in the main Shangi-La Next2 cafe. Highly recommended.

          Very Nice

We spent our first three days in Thailand at the Shangri-La. All around the room..which had a balconey..and service were superb. The breakfast buffet is good, especially while sitting outdoors. Also their afternoon tea is lovely. The Shangri-La has a bit of a faded glory. Some parts looked a bit rough around the edges. But over-all this is a great hotel. It is well located near ferries & skytrain. The surrounding area is very interesting.

          Enjoy your stay!

          Very romantic

We stayed here during January 2004. The hotel is very nice. There are actually two different towers, but they'll get you a golf cart to take you to the other one if you're at the wrong one. They're kind of next to each other. Our room had a view of the river and the pool down below. It's quite a romantic sight to be near the pool and river in the evening.

The best hotel we ever stayed in

Only one word to describe the Shangrila - FANTASTIC. It was right beside the sky train and the quay for catching the ferrys. Ideal location. Brilliant room overlooking the river. We upgraded and got both breakfast and a cocktail hour as part of the price. Well worth it.

          Perfect hotel!

I loved this hotel from the start. After a very long flight from London we were greeted by some lovely staff. Even though we were earlier that you are supposed to be for checking in,our room was ready straight away. We stayed in The Krungthep Wing, well worth the extra money, fab views on the river and more luxurious room. The pool is lovely and perfect for chilling out, the restaurant called Salathip was perfect for our first nice overlooking the river. We had to keep telling ourselves that we were in Bangkok in a five star hotel having dinner on the river!!! Price for meal approx gpb 30.00 for 2 including wine so not too bad. However i have saved the best for last which is the brekkie, truly amazing, the best food in the world!! Dont miss it!

          Pure Class

We booked the 3 night "River Romance" package and it far exceeded our expectations. Right from the limosine pick-up at the airport (Chilled towels and mineral water) through to the complimentary upgrade our stay was pure bliss. The room was enormous and the river views to die for. Each day free chocolates, mineral water and fresh fruit appeared. To get about the hotel offers complimentary cars and water taxi services, but is also a stone throw from the Sky Train - so Bangkok is at your door. The highlight was the dinner cruise (which was part of our package) great value and a great way to see the city. We'll be back!

One small warning: don't get trapped by the "tourism authority" guys at the airport - they offer "free" tours to several local attractions - while good value they are not free and they will try and take you to a number of expensive tourists shops under the guise of a city tour (very pushy and not fun)

Just got back from a fantastic holiday in Thailand. We loved it so much we can't wait to go back. We spent the first 2 nights in the Shangri-la and were very impressed. It's pure class! Our room was huge and it was only a standard river view room. The only problem we had was that it had a mouldy smell when you went in. It was strange considering everything looked so new and clean. But I wouldn't let that put you off. Just spray some perfume around the place as we did.

I was overwhelmed the night we arrived as I was sitting in the jacuzzi with a glass of beer, and listening to the live jazz playing in the restaurant near-by, and there were little lights everywhere as it was dark, and I thought to myself this is what holidays are all about!

If you go to bangkok, I would recommend that you spend at least 3 nights there, as we found that our stay was too short, especially when you are staying at the Shangri-La!

          Best Placed for Tourism

This is one of the finest hotels in Bangkok but it beats all the rest because it is uniquely placed 2 minutes from both the Bangkok Skytrain and the River Bus. The River Bus is the best way to get the the Grand Palace and all the important tourist sites. The Skytrain makes it easy to get rount the rest of Bangkok.

Not cheap but very good value.

          Opulant !

We stayed in the Kungthrep Wing, Riverview room. Lovely room interiors and bathroom, excellent service. Laundry service very expensive as is mini bar. These rooms have an excellent view of the river and fantastic views at night when everything is lit up. The Chi Spa is amazing but you have to keep your voice down to retain the ambiance (I got told off once when I got over excited about it telling my friend)....Thai restaurant really good and main pool fantastic. Staff quite formal...nice breakfasts. Staff also wear amazing uniforms, think King and I .......Posh Business Hotel....more comfortable and sumptous than the award winning Penninsula accross the river !

Good Night time entertainment in the italian bar and main cocktail lounge.

          Fantastic stay

We got off to a bad start. Off the 12 hour flight with 2 small children, one of whom had been sick all the way. We were tired, hot and covered in vomit. Had booked the room for the night before so we could move right in - arriving at 4 am. Got there - overbooked, no room, please wait till morning. Made a fuss, proffered screaming kids and were immediately ushered upstairs and given a suite for our stay in the plush Krangthup wing. From then on it was fabulous. Marvellous suite with double balconies overlooking the river. Wonderful beds and linen. The best bathroom I have EVER been in - huge, bronze and pink marble. Wonderful service. The pool was great to come back to every day- a peaceful oasis. Location was good for getting to everything. Would definitely return.

          Great start to our honeymoon

We started our honeymoon to Australia with a 2 night stay here. Off to a good start with a free uograde to a superior river view room! Everything you could think of and want in the room. From a huge shower with multiple jets to fresh fruit and plug adaptors! The thai restaurant in the garden is superb and the hotel's dinner river cruise is worthwhile too - great food and views of the temples lit up at night. We had one day of rain and spent the afternoon relaxing in the airy spacious lounge having afternoon tea. The staff were excellent too. We would definitely stay here again.

Today started with a visit to the Golden Buddha. As its name implies, this is made of solid gold. It is estimated to have been created in the 13th or 14th century. It was subsequently covered with plaster and then covered in painted stucco inlaid with bits of color glass - and everyone forgot that it was once gold.

We arrived in Bangkok at after 26 hours of travel. I used miles to upgrade us on the first leg of our flight from SF to Tokyo. Not only were we in business class, but we had seats in the "upstairs" portion of the jet! This is truly a wonderful way to travel, complete with a chair that reclines to a full bed, two meals, and a variety of movies …

Bangkok is my birth location so it is the only place to me that really feels like home. To get here first we took a plane (1:25pm-10:22pm)then we ate dinner then we took a taxi(11:45 pm-12:15am)when I finally got to bed it was 1:02am your time. We are planning to go to the temple of the emerald Buddha, shopping and we will go on a boat in the river.
