Chinatown, Bangkok

Hello!!! Well we have finally made it on to a speedy computer, sorry we havent been in contact sooner! Right, where do we begin.......at the very beginning! Flight was great, we were like 2 little kids on the plane. We had the choice of moveis, cd's, tv programmes and computer games to keep us entertained and Andy had pressed every button possible in the first 5 minutes whilst we were laughing our heads off!! The people around us were obviously frequent flyers as they looked at us as if we we...

Bangkok last day

We arrived to Bangkok in a lovely downpour. Found our way to the hotel. Fun hotel! The decor was... umm eye catching. And there was a birdhouse with fake birds in the shower. After showering and vegging for a little while, we decided to take the hotel tuk tuk to the main shopping plaza, catch the sky train from there and go check out the weekend market. What a wonderfully crowded place. The next time I go to Thailand, I am doing all of my shopping there. We wandered aimlessly for about 3 hour...

Etape 1.1 Bangkok Thailande

The Last Stop

At last I've managed to get my act together and finish off the final entry. I think I was reluctant to do it because it marks the end of such a great trip. Maybe I could carry it on into an Oz diary as well!!! Bangkok was the last stop on the trek. We left Ko Phi Phi on the 2pm ferry, made our way to Phuket town, ate a beautiful meal for 1euro and jumped on an overnight bus for a 14 spin to Bangkok! To be honest it was probably the most comfortable bus journey we had. There were 24 seats on t...

Bangkok by any mode of transportation

I fly into Bangkok by cover of night and surface from customs around 5:30am. I grab the bus downtown as the sun rises in east and get a great overview of the city on the way in. The infrastructure is absolutely impressive by any standards. I walk to the hotel via Wat Trimitr which is a nice temple in the middle of China Town. I drop my stuff down at the hotel, which is absolutely amazing, and grab the subway to the Chatuchak weekend market (the subway is free as it is election day). I walk al...

Thailand: Day One

Hello friends and family, well after a very long time without any word from the two of us, we've finally done something interesting. Lyndsay and I went to Thailand for Christmas! In Korea, Christmas (along with the new year celebrations, and many other holidays), is celebrated by quietly gathering with one's family and being boring. So with that in mind, an Asiana Airlines Silver Membership (the prestige radiates from the black and white paper card), and a week and a half off work, we decided...

Thailand: Days Two to Four

Well, as sad as it was to leave the Shanghai Inn behind, we had a bus to catch to the warm beaches and hot sun of Hua Hin. . . . and what a bus! Mercedes by brand, but with suspension that would embarass Geo manufacturers. Three hours isn't a long trip by Canadian standards, but it's a whole new story wile aboard the 'tooth-chipper.' The scenery along the way is amazing. I'm told that Bangkok is known as the Venice of the East. There are canals running along and perpendicular to the roads fo...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Shanghai Inn Hotel Bangkok

Brilliant!!!!

from ibngazelle
Have stayed in lots of hotels in Bangkok, of all classes and in all areas, but have never been totally happy. That is until I came accross this place, which was exactly what I was looking for. It's location is great, Chinatown is fun and the food is great. Also easy to get around the sites to the north and the shops to the east. The hotel itself is pretty unique interms of its decor and its atmosphere. From the moment you walk in the lobby you know it's not your run of the mill place. Rooms have everything you need and the beds are brilliant. The staff are great and really efficient - really can't say how happy both myself and my girlfriend were with everything and I finally have a place I can rely on every tme I travel to Bangkok.

Great Hotel

from Jack89
We stayed in the Shanghai Inn for 3 nights in November 2006 it is a good hotel and the staff are friendly. The rooms are nice, breakfast is good. We would stay there again and would recommend it to other travellers.

Great hotel, not so great location

from bluebike
We stayed at the Shanghai Inn during our stay in Bangkok for several nights of our honeymoon. The hotel is adorable! Great use of color and decor. Very chic. It looks EXACTLY like the photos online. And the price is wonderful.

This was our first visit to Bangkok .The hotel is smack dab in the middle of Chinatown where the traffic is horrendous. Some cabs refused to take us back to Shanghai because of the traffic jams notorious to Chinatown. There is no alternative besides a polluted-air-sucking tuk-tuk ride (which was only fun the first time for us...) Also, the staff wasn't that helpful in terms of offering suggestions of things to do, attractions to see, or how to get there. But they were kind about all other issues.

The good news is, we read, Bangkok's new subway system is extending it's rails to Chinatown...so,at that point, i'd say book away!

Great value for money

from TravellingViking
We can recommend the Shanghai Inn in Bangkok. We have now been travelling for over 4 months and so far the best value for money we have come across. The rooms are spacious, the decor tactful (oriental), good service, breakfast above average, good location, and great price for all this. And free wireless internet access in every room. We enjoyed our stay so much that already stayed there twice this month.

Luxury haven in the heart of frantic China Town

from J&B_isleofwight
My wife and I have just spent 3 nights here and recommend this Hotel. The Hotel is situated in the heart of China Town, close to all the major attractions. We booked through Ebookers and the price offered, £70 for the 3 nights, seemed so cheap that we thought best pay a little extra and upgrade to a suite.

We arrived a 9pm following an easy 40 minute 450 baht taxi ride from the new Airport. The hotel is on the 4th and 5th floor with a supermarket, restaurants and a legitimate massage and spa centre below. At first we were shown into a regular room which was of reasonable size and good quality. They soon found us the suite we had ordered. This consisted of an enormous shower and dressing room, a lounge area and the bedroom area with a large and comfortable four poster Chinese style double bed. The rooms are fitted to a very high standard in red Chinese style. The lighting was very subdued from some eight red Chinese lanterns. The windows consisted of opaque red glass panels. During the day sunlight poured in but at night it was not possible to read in the room. There were two stylish communal library and computer areas just outside our room. The huge shower room had very expensive fittings with a wonderful rain shower. The room had a safe and a good sized fridge filled only with water. The A.C. was good. There was tea making facilities, but no coffee. Breakfast included was O.K. with quite a selection

The Hotel has no bar but the staff is very helpful and willing to run errands and collect drinks for you from the supermarkets on the street that seem to be open all hours. They also provided us with an ice bucket. My only criticism is on security. They have a bell boy on the street entrance at most times by the escalators but, with a shared access, the hotel is effectively open to all. The doors to all the rooms are double Chinese doors and your key turns a small bolt that locks the two doors together. However it is quite clear that if any one put a heavy shoulder to the door they would pop open. With this in mind, the Hotel provides you with a wooden slat to place on the inside of your door to give you extra security at night. Being that the owners have clearly invested much money in luxury furnishing and fittings I believe they should also invest in a secure room door locking system.

Bear in mind that as you walk out the hotel you are immediately hit with the wonders of China Town i.e. masses of people going about their daily and nightly life, street food vendors, market stalls, beggars and frantic noisy traffic. But I'm sure you are much safer here than in London. The Hotel bell boy is good at getting you a cheap metered taxi but the best way of getting around Bangkok is the ten minute walk down to the River then travel by the inexpensive public river boats. When on your way to an attraction people will always stop you and tell you it is closed and try to get you to go somewhere else. This will involve a stop off at a shop, who pays them a commission. Just ignore them.

Macabre

from Ruscle
This hotel looked very good on the website and first impressions do not dissapoint. However, there are several things that bring it down a few pegs. You can certainly get better facilities for the same price elsewhere. If you strip away the decor you are left with a backpackers domitory. The rooms are tiny and not comfortable. If you are unlucky to be situated near the reception the wooden walls and ill fitting doors do little to keep out any noise (or mosquitoes). Mock stuffed birds in cages adorn the shower room which is macabre and I felt like I had moved onto the movie set of Fu Man Chu. Breakfast is pretty chaotic with not enough staff to service you and there is not enough space to sit at peak times. The food, cuttlery and choices quickly run out and are replaced at a tedious and eclectic rate. There is no outside view so each moment spent in your room feels like it should be night time.

It is quite originally decorated and some thought has gone into it and it will be better when the second coat of paint goes on. I constantly had the feeling that costs were being cut. For instance there is only chinese tea available in your room. The major redeeming factor is that the staff are very helpful.

Dont go

DONT GO

Eccentric, strange place but the BEST is that I left my things in the safe, I took them out only to give them to the hotel personnel so that they store them in the room they use to save the things until you come back to pick them up and... THEY STOLE my cash (20 € and 20 pounds) and my photograph camera...

It is a 3 stars hotel and you cannot even let your things IN THE SAFE!!

JUST AVOID IT

Absolutely GREAT!

from evstee
We stayed here for 3 nights and we had a blast!!!

After missing or flight we missed our first night, but they didn't charge us and offered us another night.

I absolutely loved the rooms, the bed and the bathroom with the birdcage in it!! Very colourful with beautiful details. Staff was very helpfull and friendly.

Breakfast was really good, tropical fruit, toast and eggs, soup. Chinatown is sparkling and alive, great!!

We booked a packagedeal for a real good price and got a free Thai massage at the nearby Spa, which was great.

I abolutely recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to stay in the heart of Bangkok for a good price!

It was a happening!!!!

from massypat
Hello! We´ve been enjoiing 3 very well days at shanghai inn!!! the rooms are very sweet and with much love for details. big bed, nice furnitures, lovely bathroom, very clean and new - everything chinese style. the stuff is very friendly and helpfull. we could check out at 2 p.m. without any problems (- thank´s a lot). we can highly recommend shanghai inn. i think it is within the best hotel in bangkok for this price!!! and chinatown is really in the middle of everything. breakfast is fine: small buffet with fruits, milk, flakes, toast, croissant, butter, marmelade, coffee and tea. you get also egg with ham. it´s a small breakfast but good enough. no question at all: next time bangkok with shanghai inn again - it was a happening!!!!
