Shanghai
This morning I got up at 7:30 and went down to have breakfast in the hotel. I'm staying at the Central Star Hotel. I'm very happy with it. The room is very nice and even has a cute stuffed rat sitting on the rooms table. This year is the year of the rat. That is why the rat is there. The breakfast was buffet style. It was very good. I had a lot of Chinese food. Shanghai's cuisine is known for being slightly sweet, and the breakfast food in th...

Zhouzhuang Village

Day12: September 20, 2008
This morning I woke up early so I could stroll around the village one more time before leaving. I saw all of the local women squatting down by the canals washing their clothing or vegetables for the day. It is such a peaceful place. Men were riding their three wheeled bikes delivering coal, and supplies to different shops and houses and old women were going door to door cleaning chamber pots. That is not a job I would want. May met me at my hotel at 7:00 in the m...

Day 13: September 21, 2008
This is the last day of my amazing trip to the east of China. I think I've said it before, but no matter how much I travel, or how much I understand this country, it still find surprises. It is this unending surprises that keeps me so in love with this amazing country. This morning I got up and had breakfast in the hotel. I had a simple breakfast of toast and eggs. Wendy met me in the lobby and we headed to the Shanghai World Finance Center. It just opened up la...

A tour of Shanghai through its Manhole Covers

On my last day in Shanghai before heading back home to Guilin I had some time to kill, so my guide and I strolled along Nanjing Road, the main shopping street in Shanghai. I couldn't help noticing that the manhole covers along the street were really unique and started taking photos of them. I thought they'd make a fun blog. My guide thought I was nuts, and so did most of the locals watching me running around taking photos of them. I had to wait for some people to move, and ask others to get o...

Shanghai History Museum

Shanghai History Museum

I found the Shanghai History Museum by accident. Well, not exactly by accident, my guide Wendy suggested it. It is located in the pavilion in the base of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The museum is absolutely incredible! If you ever head to Shanghai, do not miss it! The museum has several sections. The main part of the museum is a recreation of old Shanghai and its people. This section is made to appear like the old streets and alleyways of Shanghai. Visitors w...

Shanghai's Jinmao Tower

Shanghai's Jinmao Tower

I visited the Jinmao Tower on my first day in Shanghai. I was quite impressed with the architecture of the building. It was quite cool. It is covered with glass and stainless steel and the top is very spikey. The building is comprised mostly of offices and has the highest hotel in the world inside. When they say highest, they mean the highest from the ground floor. The hotel is the Shanghai Hyatt. Its lobby is really impressive! Visitors to the Jinmao Tower ca...

The Shanghai Museum

Shanghai Museum

I was very excited to visit the Shanghai Museum. Located on the People's Square across from the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, the museum is one of the best museums in China. The museum's architecture is a cool blend of ancient and traditional styles. It is shaped like an ancient Ding, a bronze cooking vessel. The museum has four storeys and each has three or four exhibition halls. It has 10 permanent exhibit halls and 3 temporary exhibit halls. The layout ...

Shanghai's Oriental Pearl TV Tower

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

I was really blessed the day I went to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The weather was beautiful and sunny, and the sky was blue with a few white puffy clouds. It gave me fantastic views of Shanghai. Living in China, I often see the tower on advertising and on TV. I never really gave it a thought. When I planned my itinerary, I added it to my itinerary because it is a common stop for our customers, so I wanted to experience it for myself. I was actually quite imp...

Arriving Shanghai

... 6 for 400 minutes. I also got myself connected to Internet right away. My in law's condo has broadband with both DSL and cable. The cost of broadband is about $10 a month. The next day, to help me sleep, my sister brought me to a chiropractic massage place at 11pm where it opens until 2am (this is only possible in China). It cost $8 for 1 hour. You can get 20% discount if you have a membership with them.
