Dec. 3, 2006 When we were planning our stay in Auckland we had made arrangements to stay with a third Couch Surfing host. However, he seems to have disappeared. He works nights and now that we are here we haven't been able to reach him by phone or e-mail. But we don't' feel too bad about that. After four days and nights living in other people's houses were ready for a room of our own. So we've decided to go back into Auckland city center and stay at the Shakespeare Brewery Tavern and In...

Today we got up fairly early, and went to the skytower. yep- it's tall! I got proper vertigo... got some great pics though! We then got some brunch and went ...

impressive (see pics below). It's also a shopping day – Mike gets
new jeans (60% off and with the favorable exchange rate – it's a
good deal) and I get a black turtleneck and a hat because I need more
layers here!
We intended to go back to K'road – a very funky area of town
(like Adams Morgan in DC) for a taste of nightlife but after walking
around all day (and by the end of the day I was freezing!) we called
it an early night.
... you walk there's a hill, very different from Chicago where you have to look for hills. I have to walk up a hill to Uni(No one calls it university it's just Uni here) and down one to Queen St. It's like the Uni is situated on a hill!!
So far in the IH everyone has been every friendly. I've meet people from India, Scotland, UK, Texas, Korea, China, California, Sri Lanka, Australia, Germany and a few Kiwis too (I'm sure there's more I just can't think of them now ...

Auckland, North Island, New Zealand dzinergirl... there is no coming back. Exhilarated by the imposing drop, all care was taken to stop the window from falling off the edge, oh yeah and ourselves as well. With a bit of brute force the frame came loose revealing some severely rotten timber that had to be replaced before we could insert the new one. I got on with some external paint work in the unrelenting New Zealand sun whilst Rob tore out anything that could be deemed unsound. We will both undoubtedly wake tomorrow crispy ...
Waitakere, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand onemanonedrum... at the same time. There are skyscrapers galore in the CBD, but Queen Street is really only about five blocks long. And then you're in neighborhoods and local shopping areas like Ponsonby and Parnell. It's hard to get lost on foot and you really don't need a car at all. For example, we're living in a suburb called Grafton (in an old Victorian house-turned-hostel might I add). On the map, it looks so far out of town, but really, you ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand jasi... for their surf and black volcanic sand. The first beach at Karekare was the location for the movie "The Piano". Returned home for a nice family meal outside on the deck with champagne, candles and fireworks. Weather has been very dry and sunny with temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s. We have had a fantastic time with the family in Auckland and continue our travels tomorrow, heading north to Bay of Islands.
Auckland, New Zealand janice40... on this trip, but I hadn't seen it on any menus yet. I had pretty much given up on getting to try it as we had left Australia, and I had been bummed about that. Despite the fact that it was fast food in a casino in New Zealand, I just had to get it. Boy was it good. The bottom was some sort of merengue cake that was much softer than most of the merengues I'm used to. On top of that, there was some sort of tangy fruit ...
