Cultured up

... that is why they decided to hang them in a former palace...)

The actual building is amazing. Clearly it is a bit **** that the people who ordered all those fancy rooms built did so at a time when most of the population of France was dying of hunger. It is still amazing though. There are just so many things to see, I didnt bother trying to do it all. I just looked at the things that I liked. It was starting to get more ...

CONTIKI - PARIS

... PARIS It is the morning of day 4. I just sat up from laying in the back seat of the bus:) We are all not feeling the greatest today, but we did have the most amazing night! Yesterday we went to the Chateau Versailles palace. It has 700 or so spectacular rooms and was absolutely massive. The cue was extremely long, so we took shifts. The mirror hall was the main attraction inside with 17 big mirrors along one wall, portrait ceilings and crystal hanging everywhere from ...

On to Paris, France

Both Bev and I have wanted very badly to come back to South Central Africa. We have developed an eternal relationship with these people. We feel we know them well and that there is a special bond between us. The Work of LifeNets Yes, we have done many nice things for them through LifeNets, but our relationship goes far beyond that. We have gotten to know them, their children and their mates. We value them as human beings with the ...

Paris - Day 4

... from the ground. At the top there was a display of computer technology through the ages and some Art displays - amateur looking. It wasn't what we expected. There was the expected viewing platform and the view was spectacular. When we arrived at the top I realised that I had left my glasses on the step! The staff at the top were great and got me down to the bottom very quickly - the attendent in the lift was very ...

Viva La France!!!

... awestruck at the beauty between those walls. All of that beauty in one place, and didn;t understand alot of it. My appreciation came from how it moved me. The sheer beauty touched my soul and compelled me to learn more - to understand and have a greater appreciation. Enough rambling - I got to see a fair bit of the art before I suffered from art overload but I got to see the "highlight treasures" like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. The more I saw, the more ...

... zoo, a mad house. Just so you know, the Louvre is HUGE. You could easily spend a ton of time here looking at all the art. I did not spend a ton of time, but then I did not see it all either. I selected sections and pieces of art I wanted to see so I would not spend the whole day here. I ventured off to the L'Orangerie Museum. However, it was not opening until 12:30 much to my disappointment. So, I wandered on over to Napoleon's tomb. Don't get me wrong his tomb itself was ...

... menace are frighteningly on view. None of it is a new story, but the feeling at both Holocaust Museums in Detroit (the new one is architecturally significant but I find it cold and pedantic), and in D.C. are about 'them' and what Europe did. France has a more difficult story to tell. It has to look at itself and say what did the French do. What did the European family do. What did they as Frenchman do? What happened to their people? Who was in the resistance, and where in what ...

Class on a saturday

After hanging out with people and transfering photos to my website last night, it got to be extremely late. I didn't get to bed until 3:30, and I had to be up for a class at 8:30. Yeh, it's a Saturday and they made us go to class to make up for the Friday we're missing because of Bastille Day. I show up maybe 5 minutes late and the professor isn't there. 15 minutes later he still hasn't ****ing shown up, and I was ******, because I could have slept in ...

American Girl in Paris!

... many in Italy do. We did the Notre Dame thing, then wandered in the Latin Quarter. This was by far my favorite area of Paris. It's the student quarter, so a lot of young people around, good shops, restaurants, cafes, and amazing atmosphere. We stopped at a café for lunch (yet another ham and cheese baguette!) and were surprised to see that it started snowing! It was amazing to see snow, and I was glad to be bundled in a nice warm café. We were there for quite a while before we ...
