The bus from Cairo was amazingly new and clean, and also incredibly loud. Setting off at 12:30am following a slightly stressful trek to the bus station we were treated to almost nonstop Arabic soap operas (featuring lumpy-faced and slightly overweight patriarchs shouting dramatic things at their heavily-made-up daughters) and ludicrous domestic spy/action movies. Any brief pauses in the entertainment were comfortably filled with blaring Egyptian pop music. We had to stop a couple of times so ...

We left Jordan two days ago from Aqaba taking the ferry to Nuweiba in Sinai. These ferry sailings are never on schedule so we were told, but we went to the terminal in good time for the overnight trip, having a booking for a cabin as well. If this sounds like luxury you need to realize that the ferry did not leave until 2 am in the morning after a very long wait at the terminal. We slept like dead for the duration of the sailing, docking in Nuweiba at 6 am but not getting off the boat until 7...

The Gang Gets Stuck

We arrived in Dahab after another grueling 22 hour bus ride. Some highlights from the bus include blasting Arabic music all through out the night, bright orange curtains cast a headache inducing glow, random stops in the middle of nowhere adding more time to the trip, 7 ticket checks, 3 passport checks, and an incident where Brittany "handed" the tickets to Lindsey but then they mysteriously ended up suck to Brittany's butt. But in Brittany's defense, they were on Lindsey's side of her butt (...

Diving the Red Sea and Exploring Egypt

Crossing the border into Egypt by ferry from Jordan was quite hectic. I would deffo recommend anyone making this journey to cross the border through Isreal instead by taxi to save the hassel. We really wanted to keep our bags with us on the ferry, but had to put them in these big carts and it was a nightmare finding your cart and climbing into it with all of the other monkeys trying to locate your bag again. Anyway we got a taxi with some others we had met on the ferry to Dahab and got droppe...

Dahab/Red Sea!! With a link to some photos!

Hi guys!!! Wow... finally a computer that is relatively normal. I hope I dont lose this entry this time. It took me a day to recover from the anger i had over typing three travelpod entries and losing them all when I clicked "submit" at the end, and trying to upload 5 measly photos that took over an hour and still didn't end up working! But after a nice day yesterday I am now sane again. So! Where do I start? We arrived in Dahab after an extremely long bus ride, 9 hours that turned into almos...

In Dahab

... then water flowed forth. You could actually see Jerusalem from the summit of Mt Nebo (it was 27km away I believe). The afternoon was spent at the Dead Sea. It was very humid and hot but it was still a great time. What they say about the dead sea is true! You just float in the water and no mater hard you try you cannot sink. It is difficult to swim due the buoancy but I did manage to do a doggy paddle (with my feet sticking straight up in the air). After ...

... has two girlfriends - one in his tribe and one from "outside" but it wasn't clear whether that meant elsewhere in Egypt or beyond. It also wasn't clear whether either of these women were aware of their girlfriend status. Five, he didn't care or know much about American politics but was very curious about what our parties and hashish are like. While extremely sore from our camel trek, we were glad we took it instead of walking in the dark alone. But as we waved goodbye to our ...

Running the gauntlet

... the trip we wandered back down to the 'Funny Mummy' for a sheesha (an Egyptian waterpipe). At 1pm we were picked up and transported to the Blue Hole. The Hole is a huge 100m deep chasm in the reef just off the shoreline, it is accessed from the shore so is a very popular spot for underwater activity. We had heard the Red Sea was some of the best diving in the world and after diving in both Fiji and the Cook Islands (which were both pretty spectacular) we were keen to get in the ...

A frustrating day

... couldn't understand why I wanted US dollars and Jordanian Dinars. Dollars for the ferry and dinars so that if the ATMs weren't working in Jordan I'd have a few days worth of money to be able to sort something out. Started to get very short with the guy. Doesn't matter why I want two currencies just give them to me. I was aware of the security guy wandering around with a loaded pistol so I didn't get too short. Seen more guns in a few days in Egypt ...

... side it because all the kings had to add something to it while they were ruling. The best bit was the hypostyle hall, the biggest of its kind in the world. It was made out of 136 columns, of which were huge! It was really amazing, an absolute must if you are in the area. After walking around a giant Scarab beetle 6 times for money we left to spend another night on the train, this time heading to Cairo. I have to say the trip back was much better, 10 hrs and we were ...
