VIVA AFRIKA Selecting adventureland safaris for us came down to price, and details of itineraries/adequacy of replies. We started with about 18, emailed them all, then just started dropping the overpriced ones and ones that didn't respond to our specific request. Many tried to get us to do stuff we didn't ask for. After about a month we had 3 or 4 and then it was simply some legwork on the internet, checking what lodges they offered, what they included and didn't include in the price. Adventu...
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania adisylDay 1 Our Tanzanian guide, Ben, arrived as planned at 8AM Friday morning to pick up our party of five from the Serengeti Guesthouse. I was excited to see the vehicle, a seasoned but sturdy looking 7 seat Toyota Land Cruiser, which had a true "safari" look to it with its boxy contours, high ground clearance, aggressive tire treads, two spare tires in the back, and of course, a rooftop canopy which could be opened-and closed for safe viewing of animals. Making only one stop in Mwanza to pick up...
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania andrewsnycFriday dawned another beautiful day. Half of our group were on a balloon excursion this morning; the rest of us had another early morning game drive, then returned to the hotel for breakfast and a morning at leisure. The impala and hyenas were up early too, and were found very close to the entrance to the lodge. Further away, we visited a pool of hippos, caught sight of vervet monkeys and grooming baboons, and took pictures of our ballooning friends. At the lodge, another swim helped cool off...

Tanzania, Tanzania mcewenmKaribu! Well, it looks like I finally got to make these entries from Serengeti. I'm back in Boulder now Dec 1st, but this weekend to Serengeti was the trip of a lifetime. Hope you have as much fund seeing the pictures as I did being there. I traveled with Dr. Gail Chanpong, my colleague doing monitoring & evaluation from Dar es Salaam, and my 4 boys. We all had a blast. Serengeti is about a 2 hour drive from Mwanza. We rented a truck and driver, packed up food and drink Saturday early mor...

... the animals out. Then the landscape turned into long golden grass, without any break in the view as far as you could see in both directions. We didn’t see any animals and by now it was almost time for lunch. We stopped for a bathroom break at a little welcome lodge and climbed up a path for a view of the area, it was beautiful. As we looked down on the view we noticed lizards on the rocks sunning ...
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania claraz8... Visited a few Kopje (Small stony hills in the flat land of the Savannah hoping to see lions, but that too was a disaster. Nothing!!! It turned out to be a bad day for game viewing. The afternoon game drive seemed better as we visited the hippo pool( it stinks!!! A warning to all those with sensitive noses). We saw a couple of crocodiles as well. After that we spotted a herd of impala and followed them a bit ...

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania therhodesies... The vibrant blue sky meeting the bright golden grass was a beautiful picture. The colours kind of reminded me of the South Island Cadrona, though on an infinitely vaster scale. As we drove along we began to crave, as all hardened travellers do, some good ol'-fashioned sing along. Sophie entertained us for a while with the 'No means No' and 'Preamble to the US Constitution' songs. Once we realised that those songs were terrible, we began to crank into the Disney, particularly the ...
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania samholdenWe spent five days on safari after the climb. The safari is best explained by looking at pictures, so I won't spend several entries describing each day. We visited two major areas: Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. The Serengeti plain is amazing. There are a few other mountains around Kili that form the Great Rift Valley. After you pass by these mountains, the topography drops into the Serengeti, and it's flat for hundreds of ...
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania jwmolesWhilst working in Arusha I took a few days holiday to go to the Serengeti and Ncogorogro crater. I had to work on the Friday so I could not leave until Friday night to join up with the tour group who had already left and were doing lake Manyara. I was picked up at 3 from my lodge where I was staying and taken to the Arusha bus station and was put on the bus to Manyara which was suppose to leave at 3:30 but of course did not leave until 5 because we had to wait for it to load up ...
