African Safari

We landed at Kilimanjaro Airport around 8 pm. It was dark and buggy...literally, bugs falling from the ceiling as we were paying for our entry visas. We booked one night at an incredible guest house called the Onsea House: www.onseahouse.com They are in Arusha, which is a 45 minute drive from Kili airport. The owners of Onsea are a Belgian couple named Dirk and Inneke. He is an architect/interior designer and she is a prosecutor, in the appeals section of the International Criminal Tribunal f...

Tuesday 4th August. Arusha, Tanzania. We were up before the sunrise as we had to pack the tent up and our gear and get breakfast( made in our camp) and be ready to board the smaller trucks ( max 8 people) for the trip to Serengeti National Park. We headed off about 8.30am in a truck run by Fun Safaris, there were 3 trucks and ours had 7 people in it with the driver. Our group was Kim and Todd the Canadians, Rosy the Irish girl, Mercedes and Angel the Spanish couple who had been dating 5 month...

Serengeti Sunrise

Wednesday 5th August. We were up before sunrise to get going on a drive early so we had a basic toast and egg brekky and some instant coffee and were off in the truck to see the animals early. We saw more lions and gazelles, birds hunting and elephants. Our group were coffee drinkers and we convinced our guide to take us to a nearby 5 star hotel in the park where we paid for fresh coffee and used their lovely loos before heading out for more animal viewing. Coffee was just what we all needed ...

Heart-stopping adventures in the Serengeti

... a kill, a gazelle. We couldn't see the cub so were still feeling bad. After a while, she came down the tree and starting calling for her baby again patrolling around the other jeeps. With time passing we decided we had to return to camp. But then, just as we were preparing to leave, the driver of a jeep parked right in front of us in a sort of T position signalled to us that he thought he heard something under our jeep! The two drivers tried to pop the bonnet to ...

On Safari in the Serengeti!

... scurried away.

Then we began a descent down the mountain and into the valley. On the way we passed many Masai herding their cows, holding their gowns around them to ward off the cool morning air with one hand and a long stick with the other. I wondered if this was their only defense. Soon we were passing a bunch of huts – a small village - surrounded by a tall fence; I guess this was meant to ...

Welcome Back Home

... a half leopards (we only saw the back half of one sat on a branch, but the other one kindly slept in clear view on a rock and even got up and walked around a little bit for us).

Add copious amounts of hyenas, hippos, elephants and buffalos, including one about 10 yards from our tent one evening, all against the classical African backdrop of plains and acacia trees, and that makes for a pretty amazing couple of days.

I

... at the tree only to see a long spotted tail disappear into the bushes below. I then realized I had seen the tail of a leopard which I would not see again that evening. We headed back to the lodge for the night. Day 6 We started off early in the morning hoping to catch the leopard which we had seen the night before but to no avail. We cruised around the Serengeti watching migrating Wildebeest and Zebra ...

... towards the river, Ben sput the car in reverse because he said he spotted crocodiles. We pulled the Land Cruiser by the side of the river and at first I didn't see what he was talking about. Only after looking carefully and with some guidance did I see the crocodiles lying lazily along the shores of the river. In the distance, we also saw the top of the heads of a few hippos but they never came much ...

We arrived at a large purpose built campsite on the top of the crater. As the sun went down so did the temperature here. We had our dinner and then disaster struck. I had inadvertently gone into the ladies toilet. It was a long drop, a hole in the ground and tank far ...

Safari

... I grabbed some Kilimanjaro beer. Once we picked up our supplies we got on the road. As we reached the outskirts of Arusha we saw our first taste of African fauna, a baboon running across the road. At this point we were basically delirious with excitement. The further we got out from Arusha, the flatter and barer the landscape became. Every 5-10 minutes we would pass a Masai Village and dotted around the place were Masai in traditional colourful clothing, herding skinny African ...
