There were also young trees and not very many of them. And of course there was construction happening. The debris has all been cleared away and we never saw any signs of that at any time. It's still unfathomable for me to think about the level of destruction that happened and how many lives have been changed.

A true highlight of our japanese experience is Zao Onsen, a ski resort town about 45 minutes East of Yamagata.
We came here a bit by chance and were very lucky indeed. This town is so charming, lots of little lodges and restaurants, it's pretty, clean and surrounded by mountains, ski slopes and lakes.
