... this can be pretty daunting if you are a prude like Steph but it wasn't nearly as bad as she thought. Surrounded by lots of naked old ladies in a few outdoor hot water rock pool baths, over looking beautiful snow capped mountains, a river and lots of autumny trees, it was actually really relaxing. ... because there was a professional photography crew there. They were setting up a very large camera and there was also a man with them flying a remote controlled contraption above our heads. The taxi driver served as our personal photographer while he waited to take us to the train station.

A true highlight of any japanese experience is Zao Onsen, a ski resort town about 45 minutes East of Yamagata.
Came here a bit by chance and was very lucky indeed. This town is so charming, lots of little lodges and restaurants, it's pretty, clean and surrounded by mountains, ski slopes and lakes.
