The Cathedral took 632 years to complete. During the war, 90% of the central city was destroyed. Eau de cologne was originated here in 1709 by the Farina family. They have excavated the Jewish settlement a little more than on my last trip and plan to open an underground museum within 2 years. We visited 7 Christmas markets as the weather was nice. Low 40s and breezy. We also went to the chocolate ...

... types of sausages with cabbage and mustard, banana & Nutella crepes and beautifully cooked restaurant meals in the evenings. Everywhere we went we were greeted with smiles at my attempt to say please and thank you in German with an East London accent, we tried ice skating, curling and even visited a pirate themed Christmas market on the bank of the river! A truly delightful festive treat that I thoroughly recommend to those that want to experience a genuine German Christmas ...

... EVERYWHERE in Europe has many italian restaurants owned by Italians. Thin crust personal pizza 4 stagioni my fav! Doesn't beat the pizza in italy but was delish. Bars were dark and played strange music but local beer was very nice. I had to try the typical german shnapps which was actually nice as well.

... riverboats...it's numerous attractive bridges and it's passing barges is a lively place.. Unfortunately it's popular river crossing cable car attraction, built over 50 years ago does not run in the winter months. It would be a great view of the city also.. (€4.50 well spent too)

Thanks for the couple of days within your inner city Cologne.. You truly are a captivating city!

... quaint hotel is very close to the train station. No one was at reception when we arrived, so we had to ring an intercom. John turned to me and asked what time they opened....pretty funny. We were let in remotely, and our key was on the reception desk....very odd. I'm afraid our hotel is not the home run that the Berlin hotel was....in fact this one is very reminiscent of our hotel in Amsterdam. No elevator....we're on what they call the 4th floor, but it's ...
