Arrived in Vietnam safely, nothing exciting to report yet - I start my trip with Intrepid today. Will write again soon.
Liking Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon as I (and the locals) prefer to call it - sounds so much nicer). Have met the rest of the group who I'm travelling for the next week or so with. There are a couple of American girls and the other 7 are from New Zealand (although some live in Australia). My room-mate for the trip is from New York and is about my age - which is good otherwise I would feel seriously old as the next youngest is 10 years younger than me! They seem like a really good bunch though....
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam abroomfield... to HCMC.I reached Orassey Market before 6.30 a.m to catch the 7.00 a.m departure. Should have taken the first departure at 6.30 a.m. which was still there when I arrived the place.
Checking in was fast and without any hassle. They asked for our (all the passengers) passports to enable them to register our names in the passenger's manifest and to my surprise they even filled up the Vietnamese Immigration arrival form for all passengers. This is a ...
... of Vietnam. The cab ride was interesting. Three of us went in one cab and three went in another. When I told the guy to turn on his meter he said...no no the other cab has the meter. I said No sir turn on your meter please and after much pleading and arguing he turned it on. When we got to the airport we paid him the 300,000 dong. I went to the other girls cab and they were about to pay 680,000 dong. My friend can't really do arguing/bartering so I had to take matters into my ...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam bridgetbomhack... Well for an hour or so I was anyway. When I
woke up the crying had got a bit louder and he was now muttering to
himself too. Not sure what exactly but I heard "Tokyo"mentioned a
couple of times. I decided to do the decent thing and get a shower and
go out! Poor bloke really had got the wrong room mate if he wanted
sympathy! I then spent the afternoon/evening having a look around the
local area and sampling the delights of the local drinking
establishments. Finally ...
... we had to try out. Dean and I agreed it was one of the top restaurants that we have ever been to. The food and atmosphere were fantastic. After eating a huge, great value meal, about $30 for 2 all up, we had to return to our room to sleep it off. Dean is in the Lobby searching the guide book for our next adventure as I write. Haven't managed to get photos on this site yet but hopefully we'll include some soon.
Until next update - cheers from Wendy and Dean

... the VERY place in Vietnam to get a tailor-made suit. Izzy and I both indulged in this luxury and forfeited our budgets. I managed to get a dark grey pin strip suit made for just $60 (40 pounds) whilst Izzy got herself a winter jacket and some suit trousers.
After four days in Hoi An things started to get a little interesting. We booked tickets to head to the relatively unvisited city of Quy Nhon. We had heard the beaches were amazing, and as the tourist ...
... on the side of the South Vietnamese, buried before 1975. I’m
pretty sure there are none after 1975 though, because that is when the
communists took over and there was no way they’d sponsor a cemetery for
their enemies. My understanding of the details is a little fuzzy
through all the translation.
All in all, we have had a jam-packed first 36 hours, have met tons

... down to the river. Saw the Opera house, presidents and vice presidents palaces, Notre Dame Cathedral and the market.
Back for 6:30 group meeting to welcome new group of five replacing Holly, Alexis, Sive, Marcello and Jacinta. Restaurant number 19 for tea with a large group -- both ways by taxi. Then walked back into town and found a really good cappuccino on the sidewalk. Today we saw a motorbike rider with two mattresses balanced on the back of his bike.
