... were notable in their kind absence of comparison to the Canadian original score and instead focussed on the originality inherent in some of the many movements. We leaft it alone after the intermission and accessed the home: an artistic array of furniture and artwork that told of neo-modern linear cohesion begging to be kept clean, neat and tidy with curses of the dust-gnomes and spiderweb gods muffled in the background. German high tea consists of a very predictable ...
Hanover,, Lower Saxony, Germany gwaymar... and almost every building had some fabulous feature to make it photogenic. Some were a bright colour, such as pink, yellow, orange or lime green. Some had old wooden beams visible (thankfully not painted black), or plasterwork with attractive features. Some had wooden carvings such as eagles, owls and geometric patterns. Some had inscriptions saying who built in, and when, and some fable or local saying, written in the old Gothic script on the beams. And some had all of these. In ...
Uelzen, Germany shanemhewittCelle was a town that was founded in the early Renaissance. It is probably much older, but the Alstadt (the "old town", in Germany, usually a pedestrian area these days) had 1520-something painted on its oldest building. It is pronounced "tz-ell-uh". It was a town we chose to stay at because we were able to get to it by rail and it had busses to Bergen, and Bergen had a bus to Bergen-Belson Concentration Camp. Yes, it was rather tricky to get to Bergen ...
Celle, Lower Saxony, Germany mrcolella... hatte doch ziemlich Angst!
Celle, Germany caroruben... autobahn. Before entering Hannover, I was led onto a quiet country lane, which offered a scenic route into the city. Navigating through the suburbs, I suffered another flat but got going in a matter of minutes. Bewildered by the many roads leading towards the center of the city, I was aided by an older gentleman on a beautiful 30 year old Peugeot bike. He led me all the way to Kleefeld where I was pointed to the right street by a ...
Hannover, Lower Saxony, Germany dvlrnr... extra inner tubes. The rest of my ride was mostly uneventful, and the sceneries I've seen would have to be experienced in person. Crossing the Elbe was a big moment, made more so by the heavy shower of rain that lasted for only 20 minutes. But it was more than enough for me to refrain from stopping and digging out my camera. I've had another rainy day, but warmer and not quite as wet as yesterday. But it wasn't until I reached the ...
Uelzen, Lower Saxony, Germany dvlrnr... eating our chocolaty treats, the boys got Toblerones, I my oreos and Laura got a chocolate bar. We also had some Gummie pasta. We got comfy on our beds, then put in the new James Bond movie, with the HOTTEST MAN EVER in it. A bit into it, fireworks started going off outside. We paused the movie and ran to the window. They were huge and went up over all the old German roofs. When they were done, we decided to make smores, before we finished the movie. We put wood, instead of coal, into ...
Hildesheim, Germany bmachus... a little something to add to the feast..Laura and I brought Italian wine, Laura and Darcy made the homemade apple and pumpkin pies, Dan made the garlic mashed potatoes (with the help of moi for carving) and other people brought things as well, such as: turkey, corn, green bean caseroll, citrus stuffing type stuff, and more! I was very impressed. We all gathered into the warmly lit room and dished up, then sat down to have a great dinner together. There were many ...
Hildesheim, Germany bmachusOur last day of class ended with an exam on Ingebord Bachmann's "The Barking." After everyone finished the exam, the vice president of the University of Lueneburg spoke to us about the economic and political situation of Germany from post World War II to the present. He made Germany's complex situation very easy to understand and helped clarify some of the common ...
