... square in Carmelo had a couple of options, one of which worked.

Turns out the hostel does not exist where stated and most
hotels near the river, about 10 blocks from the Plaza. Had to go to the ferry
terminal to get decent info and a map and then settled on a nearby hotel after
exhausting 3 other, 2 of which were unmanned – 700 pesos and not nice!

... money!!! Then we headed to the coach station, to sort out our transport for the evening. We were told we couldn't buy tickets to Salto here, but it would be easy to do in Montevideo. We follow the city walking tour (shown in our map from the tourist office) down the main street to the Plaza Independencia, getting architectural photos on the way, including the Gaudi-esque Palacio Heber, and the colonnaded over-ornate high rise at the entrance to the square. The plaza has an equestrian statue of General Artigas above his mausoleum, and the remains of the Puerto de la Ciudadela, the Theatre Solis, and a 1960’s curtain wall ...

A messy sort of day. Peter was anxious to confirm our places on the Pluna Air flight from Montevideo back to Buenos Aires as the website indicated that our reservation had been cancelled, due to our no-show on the outward leg. Belkis was helpful in connecting P with an English-speaking person at Pluna but our seats could not immediately be confirmed .

As the advertisement for Punta Del Este goes: "Reconocida internacional y mundialmente como el más importante y exclusivo balneario de Sudamérica, además de ser una las ciudades más famosas del mundo por ser uno de los puntos de encuentro del jet set internacional".
