... I got 3 for 10 TL, including a sturdy mailing tube. The museum was fantastic. There had been a sculpting school, and the sculptures were excellent. Susan, with her distaste for ruins, was impressed and loved the museum too.

... in all we were a bit disappointed in the site. An obvious fact was the main item, the Amphitheatre was being restored....yet again another restoration. We also thought the restoration was a bit too much. Maybe you can see from the picture the roof of the seating...very nice neat gravel? ... book indicated it was a 20-30 minute climb up a stepped path to the site. It should have said "steep rocky stepped path"! Anyway we made it! The flames are caused by gas seeping out of rocks and combusting when they hit the air. They burn out. Really neat to see. The guide book says if you cover the flame it will extinguish only to start in another hole. The best time to see it is at night ...

... why build a house out of stone blocks 75cm thick? They must have weighed 500kg, at least. The best preserved part was the amphitheatre. Set on a cliff it was still very impressive and from the walls you got a great view down the valley.

Almost all the objects come for the Anatolian region and lot of the statues are from Perge, an old Roman town nearby which now is not much at all but in it's 2nd C heyday sported a huge 'theatre' which had lots and lots of enormous statues.
