Jawaan Street, Al Sadd Doha, Qatar
Canadians can drive here for something like six months if they have an International Driving Permit which I picked up from CAA the morning I left Winnipeg. At the same time, no sense delaying the inevitable so I went and got my Qatari driver's license today. I prepped by getting an eye exam at a Lenscrafter type store in the mall the other day. There was a short wait so I decided to pop over to another store and get some updated photos taken. Two photos are ...
Doha, Qatar beyondwpg... pass a mannaquin adorned with low cut jeans perfectly placed on the mannaquin to reveal a squined purple thong in the store Xanada. Yes, a manaquin with whale tail could be viewed at the same time as Muslim women showing not even their eyes. There was also a "Hip Hop Store" and the map advertised "Ralph Laurent." After Starbucks we hopped in a cab for the City Centre Mall, bigger than the Villagio and located in downtown Doha. As I said, we were told ...
Doha, Qatar jimmyandkristen... given the stick I dished out on them. Anyway, the last couple of days have been filled with a visit to the amazing Souk Waqif, where you can experience the true local market consisting of a labyrinth of alleyways lined with the most intriguing shops and enchanting aromas. Tried to buy some local food and ended up very happily surprised by my shot in the dark at local culinary delights (sweet mi with ...
Doha, Qatar killian... my hijab out here since the few women I see are wearing hijabs, abayah and most men in their thobe (a floor-length white garment) with a ghutra and egal (headdress). It's quite cultural and a pretty sight to see. This morning we talked to an old friend of mine, Sean who happens to be stationed out here in the Navy. We're planning to meet for lunch so John and I make our way around the Bay hoping to get closer to our meeting spot and catch a ...
Doha, Qatar 2knightsabroad... time. Although I am told on good authority that by mid September we will start getting the glorious blue skies with no rain.....and then I am sure I will have the dust in the city to talk about. Last Friday was the anniversary of India's Independence Day and hence there was a public holiday. Having a few days to myself I actuallyu escaped the city for a few days. My intention was to go up north and see a bit of India but ...
Doha, Qatar edip.okur... cost, but I gladly accepted it in this case as the guy was doing me a service that was easily worth the fee that he was tacking on. (I think he thinks that he outsmarted me, but it doesn't really matter. As long as we were both happy, then it was a worthwhile transaction.) I paid with a hundred dollar bill and his co-conspirator asked me if she could give me my change in local currency. So I asked her at what rate and she quoted a rate that was 20% below the real rate ...
Doha, Qatar bangkokrandy... spa's hot tub by candlelight with champagne. I will include photos of all of this in the next entry - I dont have my cable with me to upload now. I saw a woman here dressed in black from head to toe with almost nothing exposed but her eyes and even they were covered in black makeup. I need to learn more about this. Okay I am boarding for my next destination so more later. Hint: I am going to a land where Muezzihs announce prayer 3x's per day from mosques with minarets
Doha, Qatar mrcwoodsman... out water, one to take our empty plates/things, one to take our order, one to bring out food, a band, etc. And it looked like each table had their own. I can't imagine there is even a 0.1 % unemployment rate here. Its like they have more money then they know what to do with. My husband works here in Qatar and has a little different view. He thinks they are more on the demanding side and do have a unofficial caste system, i don't go to work with ...
Doha, Qatar globe.trotter... is so beautiful, it reminded me a lot of Abu Dhabi (UAE). I'm hoping to make it back there and actually get to spend some time in the city. I got some pretty good pictures... The whole thing could have turned out a lot worse than it did, but I'm happy with the outcome. I'm even considering "forgetting" to get my passport stamped next time I return here from vacation, just so I can hop back up there for a couple beers! Gotta love the Stella!
