The mine is still active, producing tons on salt every year by bore hole drilling technology and dissolution/evaporation methods. There were light shows, movies, pumping stations, slides to go down (!!), Europe's oldest staircase with a 3-D projection of what life was like when it was used, and then a train ride that took us out of the mine at the end. The whole thing took a couple ...

October 6-14, 2015 Romantik Camping, Schwand, Austria

    The good - Austria!
We arrived on the shores of Wolfgangsee in Austria at 18h04 on Monday evening. The campsite we had targeted had "closed" at 18h00 and the boom was firmly lowered however 100 metres down the road, sharing a boundary was Romantik Camping. It was “good”! The site was beautiful with lake and mountain views. The evening was ...

Junior and I really enjoyed our time in the beautiful old city of Salzburg, Austria. We arrived on Friday, Sept. 25. This is the beautiful place where much of the movie "The Sound of Music" was filmed. We took a four hour bus tour that took us to various places where the movie was made, both in the city of Salzburg and in the mountains around the city. The mountain scenes are especially beautiful. We ate lunch before our tour ...

... we had to don our macs-in-sacs. Some time later we were entertained by a cracking double rainbow, heralding the passing of the worst weather. We were also hunted down to pay for our pitch. In spite of the ACSI deal finishing the previous day, we were offered the same rate provided we pay up front, as there would be no one around to chase us tomorrow. Deal! - €19 including taxes. More reading, more food, more bed. Mileage: ...

... and served up promptly. Just as well as it was a big 'un, and the trip lasts just 45 minutes. St Wolfgang is bigger and even more touristy than St Gilgen. More costumes, more lederhosen, more busloads of Chinese. We repeat our French light lunch with tartes flambee and wine, though called something different in Austria. Good anyway, though not up to French cuisine standards. After inspecting all the shops and buying nothing more ambitious ...
