Day 37 - Phu Quoc island to HCMC

Words cannot possibly express the anger and frustration that we experienced today. WARNING: RANT COMING, TAKE COVER! The day started badly, with our flight from Phu Quoc island to HCMC being delayed by an hour. Not a big problem at the time, but little did we know how things would develop... We arrived in the domestic terminal of HCMC, and transferred to the international terminal, and found the Cathay Pacific check-in area, who were operating the next leg of our round the world tickets. The ...

HoChiMinh Fever

Well made it to HoChiMinh City after a brief stop over in Singapore airport. It is hot and humid, just about died the first day, never been so keen on getting my pants off and apparently this isnt even the hot season, so cant wait for that. The traffic is unbelievable there are scooters, scooters and more scooters, they seem to be going in fifty different directions at once all tooting their horns madly (we are not sure at what yet, but it seems to be scooter talk for get the hell out of my w...

How crossing Ho Chi Min becomes fun!!

... the " Walk the street Shuffle" !
A sort of reverse Moon-Walk, and all you have to do is look straight in the eye of the nearest scooter that comes close. The trick is that if you look at them, they know what you want, and they will avoid you.( or at least try...) If you start running, you will be a "Dead-Man-Walking...too fast" So indeed it worked. A bit scary...but we were across the street.!! "" Hi Ha..Ho Chi Min....we won! ""

Saigon..

... on to look at the tanks used by the Americans, and the traps used by the Vietcong. The traps they used were all designed with spikes, to Mamie the American soldiers. We walk through the jungle and end up at a firing range - where you can fire the guns the Americans and Viet Cong used! Naturally, because I'm a big kid really, I had a go firing an AK47 (other option was an M16) - I had no idea how loud they were! and of course, this being ...

Not all tourist attractions are nice

... horrific, and burned a spot on my memory. There were also many photos of Agent Orange victims (often the deformed children of people exposed to Agent Orange, a chemical released by the US military). It was really upsetting but definitely worth seeing, its an important part of their history and would put anyone who saw it off war. It was the forgotten or hidden dark side of war, no censorship, no spin, just photos showing what was happening.

Petite panique

Extr ...

Vietnam - Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City

... we rose at 6am and spent the whole next day travelling. The day was pretty uneventful but we did meet an interesting American Vietnamese guy from LA at one of the food stops. He was there on business ... looking for products to take back and sell in America. He said we should get into imports / exports and build our own little empire ... maybe that's how we'll make our millions ha ha!! We passed through mango and dragon fruit countries and we also bumped into the London ...

Couchsurfing and Reunion with the Mekong

... farm and took a cruise through the small, narrow tributaries within the Delta. If you don't get runover by a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City, you should feel lucky. In a city of about 3 million motorbikes (not an exageration), you eventually get used to the constant bombardment of traffic, but it is overwhelming at first. The good thing is that the locals don't drive very fast because you can't really, so if you need to dodge out of the way, you have ...
