... that hour in the morning anyway!!!!!!

Went 1st class on the train to Colombo – I took a reserved seat as it was a 6.5 hour ride and I didn’t feel like standing for any of it. Wise decision. Great scenery, especially the bit to Kandy in the hill country. Mainly tea plantations and wide vistas over rolling hills.

Hello all,

After my food poisoning incident, it was a slow recovery. I managed to make my flights, and landed in Colombo, Sri Lanka at about midnight. I had booked a room in the nearby little beach town of Negombo to avoid facing the traffic, cluster f&*$ of Colombo. ... the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage so we had to get up at 06:45 for a very early breakfast to allow us to leave the port at 08:00.

Pinnawela is a government run orphanage for injured and abandoned young elephants. It is 56 miles north west of Colombo and took us about 2 hours to get there by coach. It originally opened in 1975 with just 7 elephants. Today there are 86.

The elephants are taken down to the river for a bath and a play every morning ...

... for the clergy. A chap takes an interest in us and motions for us where to wait. He uses ostentatious hand signals and I presume he is deaf. He returns every few minutes to demonstrate he is watching out for us.
