Goodbye Lanka

... the worse. We find ourselves in the midst of a civil war ruthlessly prosecuted by protagonists whose bloodlust knows no bounds. Terror, whether perpetrated by terrorists or the state, has become the order of the day. Indeed, murder has become the primary tool whereby the state seeks to control the organs of liberty. Today it is the journalists, tomorrow it will be the judges. For neither group have the risks ever been higher or the stakes lower. Why ...

... t bother to spend them. Even on the plane Sri Lanka hadn't finished with us. We were ready to go when the lights went out, there was a power cut which meant the plane had to sit and wait because it couldn't be moved from the apron until the air-bridge was moved and that needs power; we eventually took off an hour late which mean that although we were stamped out of the country by immigration twenty minutes before our visa expired we actually spent two hours illegally on Sri Lankan soil.

Arrival into Negombo

After passing through customs in Colombo and collecting my backpack, I exchanged some US dollars and caught a cab to my hotel in Negombo. The cabbie took me to the wrong one at first (very similar name) and lucky for me he was still in the driveway... second time lucky I made it to the right place. The hotel managed to find me a room that was ready (it was only 9.30am and check-in ...

Now Christmas in Colombo, Sri Lanka

... about this place, there were a lot of shacks and tall palm tree forest when we landed. It's too risky to go out of here right now, otherwise I would. Very Very Humid here though, and no A/C to cool me down. I need to get to the Maldives so I can take a dip in the Indian Ocean It is amazing how much influence the United States has on the rest of the world. I mean some if not most comes from Britain having had Ceylon (Sri Lanka) under their ...

... of the evening was largely uneventful, save for the restaurant where a magnificently huge and delicious Parrot fish was brought out fresh, with orange scales resplendent, for a viewing before being returned for devouring 20 minutes later simply grilled with garlic, ginger, lemon and lime - an absolute steal at just under £4. I also had my first taste of the ubiquitous Lion lager sold in large (625ml) bottles, and ranging in price from £0.75-£1.25 depending on where you're served.

Turns out, next week is Father's day....

... in Sri Lanka! After getting the hearing aid fixed and the mobile phone bought, we headed out to a place called Cinnamon Gardens on the outskirts. We spent about 90mins there - mainly in a Debehams type department store called the "Odel" center. I'm very excited about my one and only purchase - a cd of kid's songs that not only features "hokey pokey" but also "the birdie song"! Not sure of all the actions, but I'll track them down and 80 kids in Sri Lanka will be dancing along ...

... you and constantly have a smile on their face. We are known to them as "White auntie" and "white uncle" but it sounds more like "sweat lankie" which to be fair is summing me up at the moment! The preschool ones are especially adorable - there are no boundaries and they are constantly hugging you, grabbing your hand and telling you random English words - you never think you'll have tongue, elephant and bag all in 1 sentence! It is also priceless to see the joy on face ...

... us with "Good Morning, how are you?" But there were rude remarks in Sinhalese - from Sinhalese youth - "see that nice juicy backside." What we didn't understand didn't hurt us but our guide scolded us the one time two women went on their own. He said we should go together as one of the men around could easily drag an unfortunate loner to the bushes, and rape or molest her. I was happy with the warning because as group organizer, I was always ...
