last day at Negombo at fab prince residence

... prince residence for 3000rs very clean , very modern room with air conditioning and tv and fabulous.. it is the place to stay!!!

There was a little rain for about 5 mins but then it cleared to be a hot afternoon. We thought Negombo was a small place but in the heat of the afternoon the 20 min walk seemed a long way to the coconut palm - where we had the best tuna pizza ever for 580rs/£3. We realised the last ...

relaxing in sri lanka

... gift shop. to be fair we did get a massage thrown in whilst they were showing us there wares. in fact, apart from the fish reflexology we had in singapore, it was my first massage, which considering how ticklish i am, was actuaally quite enjoyable. tomorrow we will go back to plan a and spend the day lazing around, although we will probably do a couple more outings before we leave.

... a minion call Sri Lankan Airways when he decided to return home and ask them to arrange seats for him and his party. Being the only time of year the flights are genuinely busy they refused as they were unwilling to bump a whole planeload of passengers; he supposedly had around two hundred people in his party. Never daunted he called his relative who bumped a whole flight of Mihin Lanka passengers and sent the plane to London to pick up the party. A week after they returned to Sri ...

Except for a brief period of Portuguese occupation from 1558-73 Islam has been the religion of Maldives since the 12th century when the last Buddhist king converted. The state religion is Sunni Muslim and only Muslims; may be citizens. It may also account for the high divorce rate; over percent of women over thirty having ben married at least four times. Out of a population ...

Feeling the Heat

... provided by agencies with her four surviving children (3 girls aged 14, 13 and 10, and 1 boy aged 12) in conditions which can only be described as poor. Driven by government inaction she was forced to relocate northwards to Negombo where she has a relative. Having shown interest in her story, Anna asked me to take a look at her new (rented) home, pointing to a collection of small, ramshackle, wooden buildings just off the beach front, and only 60m from where we ...

Unawatuna is a truely lovely place. The locals are so friendly, always smiling and saying hello to you. Children call over to you from their gardens, saying hello and asking your name. Everyone here is so trusting, you can have a meal and they say ' you can come back later and pay if you like" mad!!!! we used an internet cafe and didnt have the right change, so they said it's fine pay when you like, didn't even check where we were ...

Heading into week5!!

... don't fancy cooking by a fire or sleeping on wooden boards. It's very common thing to do over here and quite a good idea since they are working 7 days a week from about 8am-6pm. Plus a well bonded workforce works better! Only down side is when you're lying in bed at 8am on a Saturday morning, only to be woken by hammering outside your window! O well, it's all worth it! The classrooms are starting to take shape. My technical ...

... like this before, for process, sharing, time, space. Personal sharings are touching. 3 conferences and 2 books is already a big contribution. What is different here is the effort to include all papers. We need an intellectual framework; I would not want you to lose that part. We cannot include everything in one conference. Evelyn: Documentation of women's voices is necessary in Asia. Pushpa: I don't think we need to restrict the number of papers. Conversation can still go ...

Another year, another country

... Sri Lanka at 12.30! The Silver Sands hotel was the only budget hotel mentioned in Negombo (a beach resort just north of the airport where we were headed for our first night) in our very small pocket guidebook (which we decided would do us as we're only here for 2 weeks) so we decided to give it a go. We weren't sure what to expect but we needn't have worried because it was absolutely lovely, right on the beach ...
