Exit San Francisco

Today I left San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge. Yesterday I went over on the bus but today I rode over it on my bike. The sun shone over downtown SF today while on the bridge you couldn't even see the top of the towers the fog was so bad. This was an omen for my ride up the Coastal Highway Route 1. For half of my journey I traveled in fog where there was no fog there was a high wind coming off the sea. It was cold (again). The road went up and down hills and mountains, it was full of s...

Realization of a Dream

The day was evenly split into two - in the morning I allowed myself to by abducted by railway riding blue grass aliens and the afternoon at the beach. First the blue grass singing aliens - I took a four hour train ride on the Skunk Train - name this because you could smell it (gasoline engine and coal oil heaters) before you could see it. The train (engine & passenger compartment all in one unit) was built in 1935 and I have never ridden on this type of train before. It was great to get i...

... What?!?! Right.. we're in California.. Movie set. So for about 30 minutes we drove behind a a gorilla in a car before we finally were allowed to pass.

Thirty minutes after that we got stopped when 3 rescue helicopters flew into my favorite coastal spot and STOP... we're going NOWHERE for about 40 minutes while a pile of abulances, the afore mentioned helicoptors, and about 18 polices cars came to rescue the absolutely devistated baby blue ...

Full of Salty Goodness!

... I where I was going – of course I went the wrong way! And it was a very fortunate mistake as I ended up at the southern end of the Sonoma coast state park which is a beautiful 30 mile stretch of stunning coast and cove. The surf was definitely up and the crashing waves and the churning foam were an amazing sight. It was a good job that my legs were not up to the 7 mile hike in Jean Claude Van Damme state park cos I ended ...

Why leave when it's perfect?

... all over town, sitting on the beach and poring over maps.
Lovely time. Lovely sunny day in the high 60s. There are charming shops and a super, raw foods cafe I ate lunch at Living Light Cuisine. Sadly the library was closed, in fact due to budget constraints it only opens 4 days a week now.
I feel ready to take on the mountains again.

Bad start to the day

... her hands at the junction with 101's feeder road. An accident had just occurred and between a small, very bashed in SUV and another car. A bad one and if it hadn't been for the small crowd from nearby houses, I and the other cars that arrived at the intersection would have all pulled over instead of proceeding as she motioned us on.
As I continued south, 5 police cars passed me rushing to ...

Exhausting Day

... on Route 1 and follow the coast line up visiting all of the small coastal towns. This was a great plan and it was definitely fun for about the first hour or two but after a grueling 5 to 6 hours of what seemed to be over a thousand left and rights turns that boarder lined a case of insanity. Alright enough of my complaining the coast line was very beautiful and all in all we had a great drive up but it was a very long day.

The Inn in the Woods

... dish was wonderful. All five courses were just perfect. If you go and they are serving lobster ravioli, be sure to try it. Yummy! The service was nice and the chef/owner stopped by the table to ask if we were enjoying the evening. They have only two seatings a night so make reservations if you want to go to this one.

On the first full day in the area, we ...

Exploring the local towns

... which is 3 miles from our campground. We went to the North Coast Brewing Company and purchased some local brew. We also participated in some Wine tasting at the Pacific Coast Winery-both very good-highly recommend "Red Seal beer" and "Dad's Daily Red" wine. On the way back, we stopped at Glass Beach which is a beach area outside of the campground. Many were swimming-we were not!! It's very cool but Erin says she is going in tomorrow. Later in the ...

We meet a european-hater

... against us as examples of Europeans. Very upsetting - not dangerous or anything but we felt under attack anyway. In the evening we found the "Grill and Tap Room" of the local brewery where MJ got hold of his standard sampler - with two amazing ales, one of which was 11%. Yummy. We both couldn't get to sleep albeit that the pee-run at 2am gave us the most AMAZING sight of the STARS. There are 1000's of them up there and they are so BRIGHTcompared with what I've seen before.
